My abundance of training and real world experience on that topic tell me the exact opposite of what you are saying.
When someone tells you you don't need an AR for self-defense, it is time to go out and buy another one because you definitely NEED that AR for self-defense.
Hell, that is exactly why cops have AR's in their cars, for self-defense (and defense of another).
