If your "reopening" plans don't include a robust, intentional, and well-funded effort to help students who are dealing with the loss of family members, neighbors, coaches, teachers, bus drivers, etc, then your "for the kids" mantra is hard for me to take seriously.

Except for @kseliger, @DanPatrick’s #txlege Senate R’s have penny-pinched #txed, pushed vouchers, promoted charters, piled on tests, and punished our schools with A-F.
Now they want us to ignore their privatization project? Their votes are on record.
Ours will be too in 2020.

Only @DanPatrick can take a fine #HB3 school funding policy—unanimously passed, beautifully shepherded, joyously celebrated in the #txlege House— and blow it to pieces with provisions teachers abhor.
The Senate is demoralized, depressed.
Broken.
And our children suffer it.

Personalized learning is critical but it has to be secondary to the conversation about different outcomes. We have to first know where we are going and why. @toddrose #LCInnovation #whyLCE – at Washington, DC

“On my way to HS, I passed the gates to Fordham University. In October 1992, right outside those gates, I was robbed at gunpoint. Rather than finding security on campus, I felt I didn’t belong there, so I took the long run home to tell my parents.” @Carlos_Moreno06 #whyLCE

“If I was a learner at Fordham, I would have had all the resources. Instead, I had to act like nothing happened and get right back in the classroom. For 100s of thousands of learners across the country, this is their reality. Living with trauma with no support.” #whyLCE

To help kids learn & grow, spend less time teaching self-esteem and more time teaching self-compassion.
Self-compassion (treating yourself he supportive way you'd treat a friend) leads to:
- greater resilience
- deeper learning
- less fear of failure.

Historically, mispronouncing or renaming people is a tool of oppression. Not learning to say someone’s name *correctly* might feel convenient or even be a joke for you.
It’s not. It’s a bad thing. Learn people’s names.

Is it better to solve problems in isolation or by collaborating with others?
Harvard research says . . . neither.
The best solutions come from "intermittent collaboration" -- group work punctuated by breaks to think & work by ourselves.

You’re 8 years old.
Your 3rd grade class orders chinese food & your father delivers it. You are so excited to see your pops in school. He’s your hero. But apparently other kids don’t think he’s so cool. They laugh at him and mimic his accent. You don’t want to be Chinese anymore.

Charter schools are a more expensive, lower performing option to community ISD’s. Charter schools receive $1000 more per student than CFISD. Charters pick the students and board members they want. CFISD takes all students and is democratically governed. I believe in democracy!
Replying to @RatliffT
To put a finer point on it. 8% of charter schools are rated F while only 1.2% of ISDs. Maybe those advocating to help kids escape “failing” schools should focus their efforts on charter students. Just a thought.
