A redux of my 50 states thread (this time, with more of a focus on the people that make this country great)
I'm going to make a thread showcasing the beauty of American cities and towns...

The Carly Rae Jepsen photo really highlights how Canadians are always 15-20 years behind everyone else

Ironically true about women, but never highlighted because that hurts women’s feelings
Because a certain kind of man believes that not getting everything he wants from women is oppression. This applies both to incels and to the type of trans-identified man who insists that speech, laws and physical spaces should be reconfigured around his self-image.

We are living in a world that exists at the mercy of Europe’s image control. Everything needs to be defined (or redefined) so that Europe can set the “developed standard”, and if they’re less developed, that becomes the developed, superior standard.
Blistering record heat in Europe this summer killed more than 50,000 people, with nearly two-thirds of that death toll blamed on human-caused climate change, a new study found. abcnews.link/EUhX7dR

On the morning of October 23, 1983, a suicide bombing carried out by Iran-backed Hezbollah destroyed the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 299 people. The casualties included 241 U.S. Marines and Sailors, representing the Marine Corps' highest single-day loss of life since the Battle of Iwo Jima. WE NEVER FORGET! 🇺🇸

On Saturday, the Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial opens in Washington, D.C., honoring the courage and sacrifice of American servicemembers who answered the call to defend freedom and helped liberate Kuwait. Their service will never be forgotten.

The country with Pakistani grooming gangs being allowed to rape children and turn them into sandwich meat wants to assert that American children are more in danger of sexual assault based entirely on his deranged conspiracies about Trump. Europeans are so fucking deluded

An American child is lucky to make it through school without being murdered or raped by men in government positions. Sorry about higgledy piggeldy buildings though.

How bout you get rid of them
Zohran Mamdani’s administration has unveiled new sidewalk shed designs for NYC in an effort to bring better-designed sidewalks to all five boroughs. The administration has also reduced the number of sidewalk sheds by 1,200 across the city — a decrease of over 15% in 10 months.

I can’t believe I’m seeing articles like this because, as a child without many biased notions of the world and other cultures yet, it was apparent that Europe was much poorer and less developed when I visited in 2008.
Nothing better for me to read this. Americans have 0 idea of what Europe is like other than the lies they’ve told themselves about it. The U.S. is not perfect but it’s so much better to live here yall. 2 weeks a year in Europe is more than enough!

An American child seeing Europe for the first time is probably going to note the lack of climate control, the pay toilets, the graffiti and bad odors and old buildings stacked higgledy-piggledy and cramped interiors and limited consumer variety and think “poor”. Come on people

I’m sure Northern Europe would be somewhat better, but most of these things - lack of SFH’s, large Latin America-style council towers, clothes hanging out on lines, obsession with welfare (it’s designed for the poor) persist, and are traits of poor countries. Not rich ones.

Notice how this guy constantly subverts what it means to be a rich country, and also creates a list of inserted opinions and words like “walkable” that he’s given their own nebulous meaning in order to make his “America bad” claim impossible to be argued with…
Achieving the quality of life afforded to middle- or working-class people in Europe or Japan in the United States is very expensive. I'm talking about the ability to live somewhere safe, walkable, next to a park and supermarket, with a few cafes and bakeries serving appetizing stuff, and clean public transport. Tract housing in subdivisions is no longer aspirational for UMC Americans.

The outrageousness of the claim and the generalizations involved cap it all off. Europe and Japan are generally poorer and less developed than the U.S., and the only way you could claim it’s harder to find all of the things he lists in the U.S. is if you’re using any limitations-

to his preferred urban traits against the U.S. and not against “Europe” and Japan. You see the implicit engine of “defining America by its worst and Europe and Japan by its best” operating beneath the thread immediately

Obviously BS when it turns around to looping America into some kind of colonialist effort but for Europe, it makes sense
Waarom zou Europa🇪🇺 zichzelf economisch willen vernietigen❓

A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.

Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. Students helped Castro and Khomeini rise to power, and Nazi student groups opposed the Weimar Republic. britannica.com/topic/Red-Guar… encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art… aei.org/education/actu…

One of the most sickening aspects of modern culture is women talking, acting, and posturing like the most boorish of men.
A nice old building burns, and so the pearl-clutching begins. Where were these pearl clutchers when austerity was wrecking a generation? Why does one town hall grab their attention but millions of schools, hospitals, and homes dilapidated by neoliberalism are of no importance?

France's level of public social spending was third highest in the world at 30.6% of GDP in 2024. Excluding the pandemic, it is slightly down from its 31.9% high in 2014. Total public spending is 57.2%, second highest among large countries not at war and near all-time highs. ourworldindata.org/grapher/social… ourworldindata.org/grapher/histor…
