@galeabrewer I am deeply appreciative of the award from the Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act and the 9/11 Health Watch at the fundraiser on Oct 8 2026 at the New York Metro Conference Center, 350 W 31 Street. Congrats to the other honorees, to the unions, and to Ben Chevat. Thank you too to Jon Houston. What a huge honor. @BenChevat @911HealthWatch @UFANYC

Government officials must be accountable to the people they serve. In 2001, and for 30 years since, I represented Ground Zero and led local leaders ringing alarm bells about these environmental hazards. We now know that officials like Giuliani intentionally ignored our claims and lied to New Yorkers about the dangers they were facing. The mishandling of these cleanup efforts exposed thousands of New Yorkers and rescue workers to toxins that are still impacting their health.

Our duty to serve the 9/11 community of victims and survivors extends far beyond the anniversary of September 11. Today I was honored to speak at the World Trade Center Environmental Health Center Symposium to support the clinical providers, researchers, and community advocates who care for victims of 9/11 health-related illnesses.
I am proud to have passed the James Zadroga 9/11 Bill in 2010, which created the World Trade Center Health Program, and I urge fellow lawmakers to continue investing in the cutting-edge research around these 9/11 related diseases, spreading awareness of resources available to those who are still getting sick from these illnesses, and ensuring every victim can access the medical care they deserve.
The UFA mourns the WTC-related passing of retired Firefighter Vincent Piccolino, Ladder 166, who passed away on September 27, 2026.
FF Piccolino served the FDNY for 15 years and worked in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

Sixteen years ago, I led my colleagues in passing the James Zadroga 9/11 Health Act to take care of the victims of 9/11 health-related illnesses. The Zadroga Act created the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP), which has helped thousands of victims access the medical attention they need. This week, I am grateful to Dr. John Howard, the Program Administrator of the WTC Health Program, for briefing me and my New York delegation colleagues on the future of the WTCHP, staffing issues the program faces, and how Congress can support this critical program going forward.

There are many numbers inextricably linked with the morning of September 11th. There are the 2,977 people who died at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. There are the 343 FDNY members, 23 NYPD members, and 37 Port Authority police officers who died trying to save lives. There are the 100 days that the stubborn fires burned beneath the rubble at Ground Zero. The enormity of these numbers is still hard to grasp, writes Lukas Alpert, but they remain fixed. One measure continues to grow: the number of people getting sick.
In the 25 years that have passed since that day, 154,700 people have entered the World Trade Center Health Program, which provides care and health monitoring to people who were exposed to toxic air after 9/11, many of whom have come down with illnesses linked to the attack. Of those, 9,224 have died. Every year, the number of sick people rises.
“After the attack, government officials were eager to get the city back to work,” writes Alpert. But today, so many years later, “it is clear that the decisions to return the city to normal as quickly as possible have had the opposite impact, prolonging the tragedy of September 11 for many of us.”

New York City has released more than 170,000 pages of previously undisclosed records about air quality following the 9/11 attacks. Rep. Jerry Nadler says officials at the time weren't transparent about the risks. "Of course they were lying. And it's obvious now."

Last night I joined @AC360 to discuss the fight to have City Hall release their files from the aftermath of 9/11 related to the toxins in the air at Ground Zero and throughout Lower Manhattan. Almost half a million people were unknowingly breathing in poisonous air, and now many have fallen seriously ill. I’m proud that after years of work with victims, their families, fellow lawmakers, and advocates, the public now has the transparency they deserve.

Wow. Who finally released them? After 25 years.
NEW: FDNY and firefighter union leaders demand answers following the release of 170,000 pages of documents revealing government officials misled the public about the toxic conditions around Ground Zero after 9/11.
Uniformed Firefighters Association President Bobby Eustace blasted officials for failing to protect first responders who rushed into danger and were forced to fight for the truth about their health.
"We're not here as Republicans, we're not here as Democrats, we're here as firefighters. We protect, we serve."
"The people sent into that toxic environment deserve to know the full truth about what was in the air."

More people have now died from 9/11-related illnesses than were killed in the attacks themselves. Survivors, first responders, and their families deserve answers about what the City knew and when.
After years of us fighting for their release, these files are finally being made public.
This is about transparency, accountability, and giving New Yorkers answers they have waited 25 years for.

Dr. Howard was fired during 2025 DOGE cuts. His termination prompted New York Republicans and Democrats to call for his reappointment ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. On Tuesday, they got their wish.
Howard served as Administrator of the Word Trade Center Health Program since it's official launch in 2011.
Advocates I spoke with celebrate his reappointment as a step toward stabilizing the WTCHP, which is still reeling from staffing cuts.
@911HealthWatch Executive Director Ben Chevat says the "reappointment is necessary but not sufficient."
Chevat is calling on @SecKennedy to "...ensure the World Trade Center Health Program doesn’t lose the reported 13 million dollars in research funds that the Congress provided but, has gone unissued. because of the continuing chaos at the CDC."
Chevat is referencing concern expressed by FDNY Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Prezant, first made public by @Newsday, that the 2025 staffing cuts have "led to delays in getting research grants approved before a Sept. 30 deadline" jeopardizing $13 million in funding for 9/11 health research.
When I asked about issues with the WTCHP caused by the 2025 staffing cuts this April, Sec. Kennedy promised me that he was "fixing it."
For more than two decades, Dr. Howard has been a trusted advocate for the 9/11 community and dedicated leader of the World Trade Center Health Program.
As we mark 25 years since September 11th, I am grateful that Dr. Howard will continue this important work and congratulate him on his 6-year reappointment.
I thank President Trump and @SecKennedy for making this reappointment possible and for recognizing the importance of Dr. Howard's experienced leadership.
Congratulations!
