Happy national aviation day!
Today is National Aviation Day... Orville Wright's birthday... & a perfect time to feature Long Island's rich aviation history. Take a tour through time honoring the development of aviation on Long Island.
Special thanks to our Partnership for Aviation & STEM Education — the Cradle of Aviation Museum — for curating photos & text.
Photo 1 – Circa 1910 – The International Aviation Tournament at Belmont Park brought together leading American & European aviators of the day, including the Wright brothers. Orville flew their specially designed Model R racer, known as the “Baby Grand,” at the meet.
Photo 2 – Circa 1920s – Vogue Magazine features the Curtiss Oriole. The Cradle of Aviation's newest aircraft acquisition returned to Long Island more than 100 years after it was built here in Garden City.
Photos 3–5 – Circa 1940s – Construction begins in 1943 for an airport on Islip town-owned land for national defense. Bayport Aerodrome is established in 1945 and remains a living museum & one of the last remaining grass runways on Long Island.
There's so much history on Long Island. Please share your memories in the comments!
Thanks also to Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society @Bayport_23N & @imageAMB.
