One letter to Carol Burnett turned a high school girl into the most famous mom on TV… and a No. 1 recording artist. Do you recognize her? Here’s a little more about her. A high school senior in Inglewood, California, wrote a letter to Carol Burnett after noticing how much they looked alike and invited her to a local contest. Burnett showed up, and that simple connection launched one of television’s longest-running supporting roles. At 18 she joined The Carol Burnett Show in 1967, stayed for all 11 seasons, and won an Emmy in 1976. She later turned her popular character Thelma "Mama" Harper into the hit sitcom Mama's Family. In 1973 she also scored a No. 1 hit on the charts with "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia." Bet you didn't know that, although I've shared that before with here singing. She was briefly married to songwriter Bobby Russell, then spent nearly 50 years with makeup artist Al Schultz until his death in 2024. She has two children and has always kept her family life private. Who is she?
