The Yale-French excavations at #DuraEuropos uncovered 100s of ancient textiles, including a remarkable piece of knitting (or nalbinding). Louise Bellinger used the pattern to knit this sweater (complete with replica scale-armor belt!). Photo: excavation archives @YaleArtGallery

It has acquired some extra meanings in Modern Greek like ξεχέζω or χέζω (πατόκορφα) = give sb a piece of one's mind; χέστηκα = I don't give a shit; χέσε μας = cut the bullshit, etc. BTW, congrats on the "Obscenity: a problem for the lexicographer" chapter.

Caught @officialnhaynes at the #CheltLitFest yesterday talking about Medusa - brilliant and funny, and just the kind of patriarchy-smashing stuff we need more of in #classics, and in general. And Clash of the Titans got a good shout out! ❤️🐍

Adding ferrous sulfate to tannic acid from oak galls to make oak gall ink in #RomanTechnology class. Changes from brown to BLACK. The smell of iron is overwhelming! 🫣🖤⚒

I’m very happy with the nation’s newly-chosen psychopomp. Like all mortals, I fear death, but, if, when I go, a friendly little bear is going to greet me, patting me on the shoulder and handing me a marmalade sandwich for the journey, it won’t be so bad.
I’ve just found the word FLABBY in LSJ (the big dictionary of Ancient Greek) so I’m done for the day 🙂 #ClassicsTwitter #ancientgreek #greek #words
Well, ποππύζω (poppuzdo) - to make a popping noise with your lips 💋 - is obviously my new favourite Ancient Greek verb 😘💋#words #wordnerd #ClassicsTwitter #ancientgreek #greek
I don’t know why, but I love that there are several Ancient Greek words for ham. (Today’s is κωλεός.) #ClassicsTwitter #words #greek #ancientgreece
