Pastoral systems are deeply connected to ecological resilience, mobility, and Commons stewardship. Pastoral communities contribute significantly to food systems, and rural economies, while sustaining knowledge systems adapted to diverse ecosystems and climates.
In the context of the International Year of Rangeland and Pastoralists, with conservation evolving at a systemic-level, recognising and supporting pastoral livelihoods becomes critical for both communities and landscapes.
The Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 2015, restricted cross-border camel movement to protect declining camel populations. There have been repeated seizures based on allegations of illegal transport and suspected slaughter. These point to a systemic misunderstanding of pastoral livelihoods and the role of camels.
Movement restrictions and repeated detentions have a bearing on pastoral livelihoods, farming landscapes and camel populations themselves. It becomes increasingly difficult to continue their way of life, affecting mobility, access to grazing areas, flock health, and household incomes.
This article authored by Rainfed Livestock Network members, Dr. Ilse Koehler-Rollefson, Ajinkya Shahane, Sajal Kulkarni and Hanwant Singh Rathore and published on @AESA_Network calls for more grounded and nuanced approaches that recognise camels as essential working animals and support pastoral mobility, livelihoods, and ecological stewardship together.

India faces mounting pressures from population growth and climate change, leading to escalating land degradation, soil loss, salinisation, and biodiversity decline.
As we move towards Vision India@2047, land restoration is of critical national priority.
To bring greater focus to this issue, WOTR and W-CReS organised a roundtable, titled "Restore Land through Integrated Efforts - Unlock Opportunities for Today’s Needs and Sustainability Tomorrow", which was held in August, with the support of the @ELD_Initiative of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit @giz_gmbh .
We have carefully consolidated the insights from the discussion into a comprehensive policy brief that emphasises that food, water, and rural livelihood security are inseparable from the health of India's natural resource base.
It highlights the potential that a holistic approach to land restoration offers to ensure India's food, water, and livelihood security in the face of escalating climate and population pressures.

Can small changes while sowing crops help fight drought?
Yes! Simple soil and water management methods — known as in-situ moisture conservation techniques — can help farmers sustain productivity even under water stress.
With unpredictable and intense rainfall becoming more common due to climate change, these practices make every drop count:
- Broad Bed and Furrow (BBF) – Helps conserve rainwater, drain excess water, and improve aeration around roots.
- Contour Ridges & Furrows – Reduces soil erosion and improves water retention.
- Furrows After Sowing – Allows deeper percolation of rainwater, improving soil moisture.
- Compartment Bunding – Creates large beds that conserve water for the next crop.
- Cover Crops – Crops like groundnut and cowpea reduce evaporation and protect the soil.
Small changes. Big impact.
Let’s make our farms more resilient to drought. 💪

Merely counting women’s attendance in a training, meeting, or project is not empowerment. “Empowerment-lite” risks overclaiming impact and masking the persistence of structural inequality.
