While we disagree with the environmental left’s rhetoric, there’s one thing we should agree on: they have a right to say it.
Government has no prevailing interest in leveraging state-led investigations to put a thumb on the scale of a fight over policy or politics.
The freedom of speech and of peaceful assembly are sacrosanct. And actions by government that, however well-meaning, chill free speech are antithetical to those unalienable rights.
The principled approach to pushing back against speech with which we disagree is more speech, not less.
Attorney General J.B. McCuskey’s office issued an investigatory subpoena to West Virginia Rivers Coalition for a decade of records on climate claims, internal deliberations, fundraising and partnerships.

Laughable.
The West Virginia Hospital Association posted that access to healthcare “is about more than the services that generate revenue.”
Labor and delivery doesn’t generate much revenue. How’s that going?
→ May 2026: Stonewall Jackson Memorial in Weston, Lewis County. Vandalia cited low patient volume.
→ April 2026: Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte, Greenbrier County. Vandalia gave the same reasons.
→ 2024: Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson, Jefferson County. WVU Medicine cited volume.
→ 2022: St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, Cabell County. Mountain Health Network cited declining births and moved deliveries to Cabell Huntington Hospital.
The WVHA also wants credit for caring for patients regardless of their ability to pay.
Hospitals with an ER have to do that. It’s federal law—EMTALA—and it applies to both for-profit and non-profit hospitals.
That obligation is not what a non-profit tax break buys.
→ WVU Hospitals (2024 tax filing): $12.4M in charity care at cost, against roughly $56M in estimated tax exemption. That's on $2.47B in revenue and a $95M surplus.
→ CAMC: $18.3M in charity care, against roughly $45M in estimated exemption, with a $66M surplus.
And when one of these systems drops a service, Certificate of Need makes it hard for anyone else to come in and replace it.
If access is the priority, why does the WVHA fight so hard to protect a law that keeps anyone else from providing it?
Access matters. So does competition.
Patients over systems.

The West Virginia Hospital Association says Certificate of Need is “essential in protecting local hospitals from being undermined by for-profit, out-of-state providers.”
In Chapmanville, a hospital owned by out-of-state companies asked for a hearing on a West Virginia independently-owned non-profit’s clinic. The judge found it didn’t qualify to challenge it. The Authority approved the clinic 180 days after Boone Memorial applied.
The case is now before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.
Who is CON protecting?

One thing the State Board of Education did not include in their proposal is the cost. Taxpayers deserve to know what’s being asked of them by @WVEducation.
Especially when WV is already spending record amounts on government-run education.
West Virginia's school funding formula needs reform. But @WVEducation's proposed overhaul is a step backward: more complexity, less local flexibility, and no fiscal estimate. Let's go back to the drawing board and build a formula that puts students first

Just gonna leave this here… 👀
Nearly the same spending after inflation. Far fewer students.

ALT West Virginia public-school spending and enrollment. In FY2024 dollars, total spending rose 1.5%, from $4.37 billion in 2015–16 to $4.43 billion in 2023–24. Fall enrollment fell 15.2%, from 277,138 in 2015 to 234,957 in 2025. Spending includes all funding sources and capital costs. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, WVDE and BLS. Axes are zoomed; the two series end in different years.
ICYMI: AFP-WV released a new report that shows West Virginia schools are MORE THAN half empty.
