🌊📢 #RecommendedReading We share an article by the Center for Marine Justice @CJusticiaMarina published by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) @IISD_SDGs, on the rights of #artisanalfishing communities in the advisory opinion processes on climate change before the ICJ @CIJ_ICJ, the ITLOS @ITLOS_TIDM and the IACourtHR @IACourtHR.
We highlight the main points of the article:
1️⃣ Alterations to marine and coastal ecosystems caused by greenhouse gases #GEI 🌡️ carry a high risk for fisheries, especially for small-scale fisheries and, more pertinently, for artisanal fishing communities, whose rights of access to marine biodiversity and fair markets are recognized in SDG 14 🎣
2️⃣ It is necessary to move towards harmonious, systemic and comprehensive interpretations of international normative frameworks to specify and articulate the different obligations and responsibilities shared but differentiated by States around the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems, and the rights of communities whose lives depend on them 📜.
3️⃣ The sustainable and equitable use of marine and coastal biodiversity 🐟🐙🐳is essential for communities that depend on fishing activities, especially those dedicated to artisanal fishing 🎣.
