🔗 geicam.org/wp-content/upload… 🟣 #ESMO26

A bold call @myESMO from @BarbaraPistill2 for trials that compare existing ADCs against new, emerging ADCs to see if there are truly any differences (as opposed to new ADCS vs old chemotherapy). Will be interesting to see which companies believe so much in their product that they step forward to that challenge.

🟣📄 We are excited to share the recent publication of a new GEICAM-promoted study in Quality of Life Research: “EORTC QLQ-C30 symptom components and their functional correlates during adjuvant chemotherapy for early breast cancer: a multivariate analysis. Data from GEICAM/2003-02 study” 🔬 🧪 This study analysed how symptoms experienced by women with early breast cancer during adjuvant chemotherapy evolve together and how these changes affect their physical, emotional and social functioning, as well as their overall quality of life. 🔎 The results show that symptoms do not occur in isolation, but tend to cluster into common patterns, with overall symptom burden standing out and fatigue playing a central role. Patients who experienced a greater worsening of this overall symptom burden also showed poorer functioning and a worse perception of their health status and quality of life. 🎯 These findings reinforce the importance of assessing the combined impact of treatment-related side effects, as a comprehensive approach can help to better understand patients’ experiences and contribute to more appropriate management of chemotherapy-related toxicities. 🤝 A special congratulations to Andrea Blasco, from @GEICAM’s Statistics Department, and to all the researchers involved in this work 👏 We are delighted to celebrate this new publication and grateful to everyone who contributed to it! 🟣 ➡️ Read the full article here: doi.org/10.1007/s11136-026-0… #BreastCancer #QualityOfLife #BreastCancerResearch #ClinicalResearch #Chemotherapy

Should we ablate oligometastatic breast cancer? NRG-BR002 in JCO (Chmura et al.; @Docace911 @IBCradiation) gives us randomized data. 🧵 #bcsm 125 patients with ≤4 metastases and no progression on up to 12 months of first-line systemic therapy were randomized to SBRT or surgery to all sites (93% got SBRT) plus systemic therapy, vs systemic therapy alone. 79% had HR+/HER2− disease. 🚫 benefit. Median PFS was 19.5 vs 23.0 months (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.57–1.47), and OS HR was 1.07. The trial didn't advance to phase 3. No grade 5 toxicity 👍🏻 ⚡️⚡️The interesting part: an exploratory analysis suggests patients with low or absent CTCs at baseline may get a PFS benefit from ablation. That makes biological sense, since these may be the patients with truly limited disease and less micrometastatic burden. Bottom line: no routine consolidative SBRT for oligometastatic breast cancer outside a trial. CTC-selected trials could be the next step. doi.org/10.1200/JCO-26-00201

The Lancet staff are going on strike for the first time in the journal’s 200-year history. Is it surprising? I don’t think so. Authors produce the research and write the papers. Reviewers provide scientific evaluation, mostly for free. Editors carry much of the burden of keeping the system running. Then the same academic community pays thousands of dollars in APCs to make its own work open access. Yet staff are now striking over pay, while the publisher’s scientific, technical and medical division reports more than £1 billion in annual adjusted operating profit. So there is a simple question: where does all that money go? Authors, reviewers, editors, and institutions are carrying an ever-growing burden. I don’t think the current academic publishing model is sustainable. researchprofessionalnews.com…

🟣📄 We are pleased to share the publication in Cell Death & Differentiation of a study conducted with the collaboration of @GEICAM: “The promyelocytic leukemia PML protein coordinates immune evasion in triple-negative breast cancer via independent and converging mechanisms”. 🔬 This study includes data from patients enrolled in the ETNA trial (GEICAM/2012-10_ETNA) and investigates the role of the #PML protein in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), one of the most aggressive #breastcancer subtypes and one with limited therapeutic options. 🧫 The researchers found that PML promotes different mechanisms that allow tumor cells to evade the immune system, contributing to an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and making it more difficult for lymphocytes to recognize and attack #cancer cells. 🎯 These findings identify PML as a potential therapeutic target to enhance the immune response against #TNBC 🧪 As treatments targeting PML already exist in other clinical settings, including certain leukemias, these results open the door to exploring new strategies to improve the efficacy of #immunotherapy and clinical outcomes for patients with triple-negative breast cancer. 🤝 GEICAM is represented among the authors by Dr. Sonia Servitja and Dr. Josefina Cruz, both @GEICAM members 👏 Congratulations to them and to all the researchers involved in this important work. ➡️ Read the full article here: doi.org/10.1038/s41418-026-0…

🔬🌍 We are at the 38th European Congress of Pathology, taking place these days in Stockholm! We are also contributing to the congress with a study from the GEICAM/2014-03 RegistEM study, presented today as a poster during the Breast Pathology session. 🧬 The study, entitled “High frequency of ESR1 mutations at progression to first- and second-line CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy predicts poor prognosis in ER+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer: results from the GEICAM/2014-03 RegistEM study”, analyzes the presence of ESR1 gene mutations in patients with ER+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer following disease progression on CDK4/6 inhibitor therapies. 🔎 The results show that around 4 in 10 patients have ESR1 mutations when the disease progresses following these treatments. These alterations are associated with poorer outcomes and could help identify patients at higher risk of treatment resistance. 🧪 The study also highlights the value of liquid biopsy for detecting these mutations and obtaining molecular information about the disease in a non-invasive way, helping to better inform treatment decisions. 🩺 Thank you to all the researchers involved in this work, and especially to Dr. Federico Rojo, @GEICAM member, pathologist and Head of the Department of Pathology at Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz, who is presenting this poster today in the Swedish capital. #ESPCongress #BreastPathologySession #pathology

👏🟣 We’re starting September with great news at @GEICAM: another scientific publication from our group! 📑 The article, “Sensitivity to endocrine therapy index predicts benefit from weekly adjuvant paclitaxel for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in the GEICAM/9906 trial”, has been published in @CCR_AACR 📕 🔬 The study investigates whether the SET ER/PR index, a molecular measure of the tumor’s endocrine activity, can help identify patients with hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative #breastcancer who may benefit from adding weekly paclitaxel to standard adjuvant chemotherapy with anthracyclines. 📊 Based on more than 560 tumor samples from the GEICAM/9906 trial, the results show that approximately 16% of tumors had low #endocrine activity. In this subgroup, adding weekly #paclitaxel reduced the risk of distant recurrence by half, while no additional benefit was observed in tumors with high endocrine activity. Differences in overall survival were not statistically significant. 💡 These findings independently validate the SET ER/PR index as a predictive #biomarker of benefit from paclitaxel and support its potential role in guiding chemotherapy treatment selection for patients with HR+/HER2- breast cancer, contributing to a more personalized approach to treatment. 💜 Congratulations to Dr. Miguel Martín, former president of GEICAM and lead author of the study, and to all the researchers and authors involved in this important work! 📝 Explore the full study here: ➡️ doi.org/10.1158/1078-0432.CC… #ClinicalResearch #Oncology #PersonalizedMedicine
