So, are we going to talk about Lamine Yamal’s performance today? Not up to his standard.

Great example. Barcelona’s biggest problem is not using the striker in the press. Raphinha can easily force Konate to make a pass instead of Gordon needing to. It’s forcing them to play but at their terms. Use Raphinha and let Gordon stay on Valverde. Too immature.
Replying to @Carretero__

The reason I was so high on signing Amadou Onana for Barcelona is because we need to focus on signing players that are not just competent technically but also physically excellent. Our physical floor is poor & it will hurt our ability to compete all-round. Needs to change.

Like Arne Slot said, there’s no point of tactics if you can’t win your duels. Our dueling ability in this squad is absolutely shocking. Arteta prioritised improving the physical floor & turning Arsenal into a team with physical monsters from the beginning & look at them now.

Villa might not be a giant but they’re incredibly smart in big games. Emery is a great KO coach & loves strategising vs big teams. He has an underdog mentality & loves preparing detailed game plans for big matches. He fits the profile of Flick’s kryptonite managers. Curious.

This discourse on Flick is so tiring. He's a top manager, he's taken Barcelona up a notch and has raised the ceiling of this team with a very limited budget. That doesn't mean he's indefensible and he's made very questionable decisions. Nuance is not hard. 1/

He's got tactical deficiencies, might or might not win us the UCL (more likely not at this stage) and we might need to move on from him as a club in 1 or 2 seasons. That doesn't mean he's not a top manager or that he didn't make us much better as a team. Why so much beef? 2/2.

Fermin Lopez should not be starting any of the big games. He’s temperamentally weak, positionally static horizontally & he doesn’t read the game well enough out of possession. Loses his man, fails to track players, does not cover for his teammates as well. 1/

I don’t think we should sell him. He’s valuable against low blocks because of his vertical threat and box crashing abilities. Also helps in counter pressing versus teams that concede territory. But he can’t be starting big games. Us with Olmo vs us with Fermin are different. 2/

With Olmo, he offers proximity, one touch combinations vs high presses and moves smartly between the lines. Also is smart in the press and tracks people well. We could see his absence in the first half vs PSG after he went off injured. We were more in control until then. 3/3.

For a team that plays a proper M2M press, Barcelona have bad individual duellers across the pitch and especially in wide areas. For Flick’s system to work, the wide defenders need to be reliable 1v1 defenders because the press wants to force play down the flanks.

Think Iraola deserves far more credit than the general consensus seems to be right now, he’s lost ONE match at Liverpool, to City. They’re 3 wins from 3 in the UCL, on 15 points after 8 games (71-ish point pace), utilising Nyoni, Koumas, Rio, McConnell. They were one of the teams whose transfer business was most worrying, Araujo’s done well but RB, LB, central midfield, he’s managed those issues near-perfectly. Still so much to be improved on even from a coaching POV but in a transition season with a sub optimal “rebuild” in the summer, you couldn’t have asked for much more.

I can’t believe Chelsea fans wanted Alonso sacked. This is clearly a good manager doing a lot of tough work to enforce principles here. He needs time & he deserves it based on how he’s been till now. Not a guarantee of success but he should get a full season. Back him.

I’d agree with this if our performances in the KOs are not good enough. Criticism shouldn’t be condescending. Respecting an individual is part of criticism. You can acknowledge Flick raising the ceiling of this team while saying he might not be able to take us there. Simple.
This is so apt. There’s no other way to look at it. I said in a previous post that Flick is just another step in the right direction, but he’s not the man to take us to the promised land. How can he be that man when he keeps failing to beat big teams? When his original contract expires in 2028, he should walk away without even considering the option of extending it for another year.

In both defeats for Barcelona last week, they faced teams who used the switch of play effectively Barcelona are quite ball-oriented in their pressing and try to keep their defensive line closely connected, meaning they leave space on the ball-far side

Simply does not apply in this context. This is a long established strategy since 2 seasons. We haven’t seen many goals in that manner this season because we’ve been pressing much better, blocking passing angles better & not allowing long switches. We didn’t do that vs Madrid
There seems to be an unwritten rule among coaches: they don't expose to the public the weaknesses of another team. It's very rare when a coach does it, to expose the other team verbally. But Mourinho has now done it for 2 seasons in a row. Last season, Benfica faced a Porto side that had won every game until then. Porto were playing well and dominating. Then Mourinho held them to a 0-0 draw, in a game where Porto couldn't even create a big chance. He did this by letting the CBs have the ball and always focusing the pressure on the CDM, Alan Varela, to disrupt Porto's build up. He explained this in a press conference, saying this is how you hold Porto down, and later even called them "easy to analyse". And all of a sudden, this is how every team started playing against Porto (Moreirense started it straight away, in the following matchday). And the quality of Porto's game decreased massively. Porto were still champions, in this case, but playing one of the most boring and pragmatic types of football that the country had ever seen, from the moment they faced Mourinho's Benfica in matchday 8. And now he has broken that unwritten rule once again. Mourinho beat Barcelona and explained to everyone that the way to break their high line is to have the midfielders running in behind, because their high line is not prepared to cover them. I wonder if we're now going to see a lot of teams using their midfielders to exploit the space against Barcelona, and if that will have any big impact on Barcelona's win rate (which was 100% until now) for the rest of the season.
