It was a pleasure hosting @ANS_org President Mark Peters at our Reactor Demonstration Campus in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, this week. Dr. Peters met with Kairos Power staff members and got a firsthand look at the progress we’re making on Hermes 2, which will deliver up to 50 MW of reliable power to the @TVAnews grid to help power @Google data centers.

Biggest news in safe nuclear waste disposal ever! "This is the first operating license anywhere in the world granted for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel." Huge congrats to Finland for finally answering the question and implementing the solution.

Happy Birthday, Niels Bohr! Born on this day in 1885, Bohr is famous for his revolutionary theory on atomic structures and radiation emission. Bohr’s atomic model explains that electrons orbit the nucleus at certain distances. When an electron changes orbits, a light quantum is emitted. Photons are emitted as a result of the energy difference between the initial and final orbit. Bohr's theory could explain why atoms emit light in fixed wavelengths. Thanks to his fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory, Bohr received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. In 1954, Bohr helped to establish the European Organization for Nuclear Research, and in 1955, he put together the Atoms for Peace Conference. Bohr received the Atoms for Peace Award in 1957 for his continuous efforts to call for peaceful applications of atomic energy.

Indian Point opponents promised that hydro power from Quebec would supply as much electricity as one of the units. That new source of supply needed a transmission line. After many delays, the line is now in service - roughly 5 years after the last electricity from Indian Point NPP was supplied to the grid. But…. Hydro Quebec is supplying something less than 20% of the promised power. The deal approved by NYSERDA includes many loopholes that allow Hydro Quebec to keep its “abundant” power whenever it needs it.
"One project alone [the Champlain Hudson Power Express] could provide 1,000 megawatts of hydropower – 50 percent of Indian Point's capacity – and that project has all its approvals." - Paul Gallay, Riverkeeper president, January 2017 Yesterday, CHPE delivered zero. It wasn't an outage. NYISO listed the line as available at its full 1,250 MW for all 24 hours, and Hydro-Québec scheduled nothing across it. The last time that happened was July 28. The drop came fast: CHPE carried 15–20 GWh a day from Sept 28 to Oct 1, then 7.6 GWh on Oct 2, about 3 GWh on Oct 3 and 4, and nothing on Oct 5. Is that allowed? Yes. Hydro-Québec's contract with NYSERDA has no daily or hourly delivery requirement. According to the PSC order approving it: The only floor is seasonal. Hydro-Québec has to deliver 40% of its promised annual amount in each six-month period. That floor isn't enforced yet. It's measured over three seasons and doesn't start counting until the third, so the first real test is around summer 2027. Outages shrink it. It's reduced whenever the line is down, and for curtailment and force majeure. Hydro-Québec is paid only for what arrives. A zero day costs ratepayers nothing, and also delivers nothing. The promise was much bigger than the floor. Hydro-Québec bid 10.4 TWh a year. When the PSC approved the contract, it said that number showed the "objective to fill the CHPE line to maximum capacity for 95% of the year." Since June 1, CHPE has delivered 0.68 TWh, about 19% of that pace. Over the entire day: New York used 378 GWh. Gas supplied 36%, nuclear 20%, hydro 18%, solar 9%, wind 9% and imports 8%. Demand peaked at 18.0 GW at noon, and NYC's highest-priced hour hit $97/MWh.

This is the thrilling next chapter in microreactor development. This kind of early customer is exactly the kind of thing that can help propel a reactor program through the high-capital valley. Good luck to all five companies!
BREAKING: The first fully operational commercial nuclear microreactor will be deployed at a U.S. Army installation in 2028. To achieve this, the Army has awarded a combined $2.2 Billion to five competing commercial companies.

Admiral Hyman Rickover ran the US nuclear Navy for 34 years and got fired over the radio. He sawed 6 inches off 2 chair legs to watch candidates slide while he grilled them. Wrong answer got you 3 hours in a broom closet. Alone. Thinking. He built the Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine, from scratch in 5 years. The Soviets never caught up. 141 ships ran on his reactors by the time he left. 1 in 4 admirals in the fleet were trained by him. He never read Navy regulations. Banned the book from his office. Made a man burn his copy. He was Jewish at Annapolis in the 1920s. Hazed harder than anyone. Decades later, the same men came asking him for favors. He said no. "I have the charisma of a chipmunk," he told Diane Sawyer at 84. He wasn't joking. Reagan pushed him out in 1982 after 64 years of service. Rickover didn't get a phone call. "My wife told me. It's on the radio that you're fired." General Dynamics gave him gifts for 16 years. $67,000 worth. He got censured for it. He'd also accused them of $1 billion in false claims and refused to pay out. 2 months after he left, the Navy paid every dollar. "Of course, that's a coincidence."
