Exceeding 1.5°C makes a devastating difference to our lives.
For our small island developing states, 1.5°C is PERSONAL. And we are #NotJustANumber

On October 5, Palau, speaking on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) during the General Debate of the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee, called for urgent action to address the growing financing challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Our SIDS Climate Change negotiators converged for our AOSIS Coordinators Meeting ahead of #COP31.
The 1.5°C goal remains our North Star, and we are determined to impel action that will advance both ambition and implementation.

Thank you @JosephTeoSG and all of our brilliant #AOSIS Ministers, who amplified our call for a SIDS Plan to Accelerate Solutions at #COP31!

As a packed #UNGA81 High-Level Week neared its end, on Friday 25th September the AOSIS Chair convened a special Climate Change Ministerial to chart a cohesive way forward to COP31.
Limiting 1.5°C overshoot remains paramount.
“This cannot be business as usual."
"We cannot make a mockery out of multilateralism. Limiting overshoot and returning below 1.5°C is not only possible, but an obligation.
UNGA 81 must ensure that 1.5°C remains the North Star of climate action."

This past week, the Executive Committee of the WIM (Warsaw International Mechanism) for Loss and Damage held its 25th meeting for the first time in an atoll nation - Majuro, Marshall Islands. This meeting provided a critical firsthand view of the climate impacts SIDS face daily.
The planet’s life-support systems are on the brink, leaving no room for hesitation. In the words of one of our key negotiators Ambassador Thomas, holding global warming to 1.5°C is our non-negotiable, our “north star”—it is time to deliver on the targets the world agreed upon.
Understanding Climate Tipping Points |#SIDS are on the frontlines, but climate tipping points don’t recognize borders. Exceeding 1.5°C risks setting off irreversible chain reactions that threaten global stability. What endangers islands today destabilizes the world tomorrow.
In Palau’s capacity as Chair of AOSIS, H.E. Minister Tmetuchl reiterated our collective commitment to sustainable development across #SIDS. At the SIDS GBN and the launch of the IIF, he emphasized how cross-regional and public-private partnerships can drive lasting resilience.

The magnitude of potential overshoot can still be limited. Governments must do everything possible to minimise overshoot and return global temperatures to below 1.5°C rapidly, ASAP!

Stakeholders from Small Island Developing States convened to strengthen capacity of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) to support sustainable development and the implementation of the #SDGs.
During the ECOSOC’s adoption of the operational activities for development resolution, AOSIS Chair stressed that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) call for the UN development system that responds to our unique circumstances and vulnerabilities.
