How can the global health architecture evolve to better respond to a rapidly changing world? There are profound shifts in national and regional health system capacity – amid mounting disease burdens, rapidly evolving scientific and digital technologies and volatile global health financing. At the same time, the growing number of global health actors has brought new opportunities but also contributed to fragmented mandates and other challenges. Following diverse consultations, Member State briefings and engagement with global health institutions and other stakeholders including civil society, the World Health Assembly established a WHO-hosted and Member State-led Joint Process to develop options, recommendations and a reform road map. Join the WHO Western Pacific’s #RC77 virtual side event on Global Health Architecture Reform and learn more about this crucial process. 📅 8 October 2026 🕙10:00 AM–11:30 AM, Manila (GMT+8) Register via the QR code or through this link: bit.ly/3V3r8n6 #RC77 #GlobalHealth

The first-ever high-level #OneHealth Summit takes place in Lyon today – a landmark opportunity to strengthen global health and security. Pandemics. Drug resistance. Food safety. The climate crisis. It’s all inextricably connected. In this op-ed for the @wef, @RD_WPRO Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala urges @WHO Member States to make the investments necessary to take One Health from slogan to reality – for once and for all.

I am deeply concerned by multiple reports of health personnel and medical facilities in Iran being impacted by the recent insecurity, and prevented from delivering their essential services to people requiring care. In recent days, there have been reports of health workers assaulted, and at least five doctors detained, while treating injured patients. I call for the release of any health worker in detention. Healthcare personnel should never face intimidation. @WHO has confirmed that the Khomeini Hospital, in the western city of Ilam, came under attack earlier in January. Violence was reported inside and around the facility following the transfer of injured people to the hospital. Medical services and supplies were disrupted and affected. We have also confirmed that multiple health facilities were damaged across Iran in recent weeks, including 10 prehospital emergency posts, where more than 50 paramedics were injured and over 200 ambulances damaged. Tear gas was also reportedly used at Sina Hospital in Tehran. The recent crisis, according to reports, has strained the health system. It is imperative that health facilities are protected and be able to deliver their critical health services in an unimpeded manner. This is fundamental to the provision of health care required by all people who need services, especially during times of crisis. Healthcare should never be a target.

Important program of action ahead for @AP_Observatory to give governments & partners evidence they need to inform #health policy decisions. 🇦🇺 is current #APO chair, so great to see positive commitments & connections as we work to advance regional #data collaboration & sharing
⚡Energized by the 28th #APO Board Meeting in New Delhi, India! This year’s conversations set a bold path forward which centered on regional collaboration, evidence uptake and strengthening the #HPSR ecosystem in Asia Pacific. From the launch of the #APOConsortia to new HiT publications and more #APOWebinars, we’re focused on what matters: helping decision-makers and researchers navigate shared challenges with timely, contextual evidence. It was a privilege to reconnect in person with Board Members, Internal Review Panel (#IRP) members and partners across the region. We're grateful for the trust and momentum in the room. 📍 Hosted at @whosearo #HealthPolicy #HealthSystems #HealthResearch #RegionalCollaboration #EvidenceInformedPolicy #AsiaPacific

Framing the problem as determinant of what kind of solutions we come up with; Lovely example of problematising the system (rarely done) vs problematising individuals/socio-economic or other-ed groups #HSR2024 plenary today

Interesting review presented by @DrJasper1 - a synthesis of studies relevant to #PHC in SEAR and WPR in last 10 years. Findings highlight increasing output; dominant focus on HRH and service delivery, less on information systems, governance & financing @AP_Observatory #HSR2024

#HSR2024 PHC session led by @WHOSEARO & @AP_Observatory on Primary Health Care in SE Asia region; shows strong national & regional level agenda-setting for PHC, yet “on ground” tough to see gains beyond infrastructure & capacity-building…what ails institutionalising PHC? 🤔
