A Diwali Reset: Six Checks for Your Investment Portfolio The festive season brings a sense of renewal. We clean our homes, make fresh purchases, and prepare for a new beginning. It is also a good time to review our financials and the investments we have built over the years. As Diwali approaches, here are six checks to help ensure your portfolio stays aligned with your financial goals. 1. Revisit your financial goals As life changes, so do our financial priorities. Review your short-, medium- and long-term goals and check whether your investments are on track. Short-term goals call for greater stability, while medium- and long-term goals may allow for more growth-oriented investments. 2. Check your asset allocation Market movements can change the mix of equity, debt, and other investments in your portfolio. If equity has performed well, for example, its share may have grown beyond your planned allocation. Review your current mix and rebalance, where needed, to keep it aligned with your goals. 3. Look for overlaps in your investments Adding more mutual fund schemes does not automatically improve diversification. Different schemes may hold many of the same companies, even if they belong to different fund houses. Check whether your funds invest across different companies and sectors or simply repeat investments you already have. 4. Build a long-term portfolio Holding too many products can make your portfolio difficult to manage. You may have mutual funds, ETFs, direct stocks, PMS, and AIFs without a clear picture of how they fit together. Review all your investments as one portfolio and make sure each has a role and works towards your financial goals. 5. Review performance before making changes Review your overall portfolio's performance over the past year. Compare each mutual fund scheme with its benchmark and category peers. If a fund has performed worse than most of its peers for four to five years in a row, consider replacing it. One bad year after three good years is not, by itself, a reason to exit. Also review major changes in the fund's portfolio or fund manager before deciding. 6. Keep enough money for contingencies Set aside enough money for emergencies and upcoming expenses. This can help you avoid withdrawing from long-term investments when you need cash, allowing you to stay invested and keep your goals on track. A Diwali reset for your financial future Diwali is a time to clear out the old, welcome new beginnings, and look forward to brighter days. Give your investments some attention too. Use this festive season to review your portfolio, address any gaps, and ensure it continues to work towards your goals. A little clarity today can help you move into the year ahead with greater confidence. Wishing you and your family a Happy Dhanteras and prosperous Diwali!

Did you know? Indiaโ€™s active equity mutual funds recorded positive net inflows every month from April to September FY27, reflecting continued domestic participation through changing market conditions. While monthly inflows fluctuated during this period, September saw a rise to โ‚น38,307 crore from โ‚น29,329 crore in August, nearly matching Aprilโ€™s level. The consistency of these inflows shows that domestic investors continued to commit capital despite external uncertainty and continued FII outflows. For investors, this matters because domestic participation provides an additional source of demand for Indian equities. While it cannot prevent market volatility, it can help absorb some of the pressure from foreign selling and provide a supportive base for the market. The broader takeaway is the resilience of domestic investor confidence, even as global developments influence market sentiment. Leadership begins long before the title. To lead effectively, one must first understand the work, build credibility through competence and develop a genuine desire to help others grow. Inputs may come from many voices, but once a direction is decided, collective alignment becomes essential. Because leadership is not only about setting the direction. It is also about building people who can move forward with it. Stay connected with Anand Rathi Wealth for more data backed perspectives on the Indian economy. Gold has always held cultural significance during Dhanteras, but when viewed as an investment, the way gold is purchased can make a meaningful difference to overall returns. In an article published in Mint, Chirag Muni, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth, shares his perspective on choosing between physical gold, Gold ETFs and Sovereign Gold Bonds, highlighting the importance of cost efficiency, liquidity and disciplined asset allocation. He explains that while gold jewellery is primarily suited for personal consumption, making charges, GST and resale deductions can reduce the actual returns realised by investors. Gold coins also involve purchase premiums and potential resale costs that need to be considered. For investors seeking exposure to gold prices, he favours Gold ETFs due to their relatively lower costs, greater transparency and ease of buying and selling. Unlike physical gold, ETFs eliminate making charges and storage expenses while offering exchange traded liquidity. He also highlights that investors considering Sovereign Gold Bonds through the secondary market must carefully evaluate liquidity, purchase premiums and remaining maturity. With the capital gains tax exemption no longer available to secondary market buyers, Gold ETFs offer a more practical alternative. Beyond choosing the investment instrument, he emphasises the importance of maintaining an appropriate allocation. Gold exposure of 5% to 10% of the overall portfolio can be considered as a partial replacement for the debt component rather than an additional allocation. The larger perspective is that gold investments should be approached through a structured process that prioritises cost efficiency, liquidity and alignment with long term wealth goals. Starting a mutual fund investment journey is not just about choosing the right funds. It is about building a portfolio that aligns with financial goals, investment horizons and risk appetite. In an article published in The Economic Times, Mukesh Kumawat, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth, shares his perspective on how first time investors can approach mutual fund investing through disciplined asset allocation and diversification. He highlights that actively managed equity mutual funds can provide a strong starting point for long term wealth creation. Within the equity portfolio, investors can consider allocating 50% to 55% to large caps, 20% to 25% to mid caps and the remaining portion to small caps, ensuring diversification across market capitalisations. The larger perspective is that successful wealth creation depends on a structured investment process, appropriate diversification and consistency rather than chasing recent returns or reacting to temporary market movements. A sharp correction in silver prices may appear to present an investment opportunity, but lower prices do not necessarily translate into better long term returns. In an article published in Moneycontrol, Adil Chacko, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth, shares his perspective on silver ETFs, highlighting the importance of evaluating volatility, risk adjusted returns and portfolio allocation before making investment decisions. He cautions against averaging down in silver, as this increases exposure to an already volatile asset. For instance, an investment of โ‚น1 lakh declining to โ‚น70,000 would require a recovery of nearly 43% merely to break even. His analysis of historical data since 1990 indicates that silver has delivered a Sharpe ratio of 0.27, compared with 0.59 for the Nifty 50 over five year rolling periods. Silver has also experienced annual volatility of approximately 30% to 32%, significantly higher than the Nifty 50's 17% to 18%. Given these differences in risk and return characteristics, he does not favour silver as an allocation for long term wealth creation. Even investors with 5% to 10% exposure may consider gradually rebalancing towards diversified equity mutual funds. The broader perspective reinforces that investment decisions should be driven by long term risk adjusted returns and disciplined asset allocation rather than price corrections alone. Gold and silver have delivered strong returns in recent periods, but their role in long term wealth creation needs to be evaluated beyond short term performance. In an article published in The Economic Times, Manish Srivastava, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth, shares his perspective on gold and silver ETFs, highlighting the importance of asset allocation, risk adjusted returns and disciplined investing. He explains that while gold can provide a hedge against inflation and market uncertainty, it should not replace equities as the core asset class for long term wealth creation. Silver, on the other hand, carries higher volatility due to its dependence on industrial demand and offers relatively weaker long term risk adjusted returns. He highlights that investors following an 80:20 equity and debt allocation can consider maintaining 80% in equity, 10% in debt and 10% in gold, treating gold as part of the defensive allocation rather than an additional asset class. He also cautions against making investment decisions based on recent returns. Investors with excess exposure to precious metals should reassess their portfolio allocation, while those building gold exposure can consider staggered investments through SIPs instead of committing a lump sum. The larger perspective is that equities remain central to long term wealth creation, while gold can play a limited defensive role. A structured investment approach, focused on asset allocation rather than short term market movements, remains essential for achieving long term wealth goals. Being uncomplicated begins with being truthful. In the promises we make, the decisions we take and the way we treat people. As we conclude our Saturday quotes from Rakesh Rawal Uncomplicated, this thought brings us back to the principle at the heart of the series. Clarity comes from saying what we mean and living by what we say. Its value lies in how consistently we practise it. Thank you for being part of these Saturday reflections. When a fixed deposit approaches maturity, the decision to renew should go beyond the interest rate being offered. Liquidity requirements, interest rate expectations and post tax returns are equally important considerations. In an article published in Financial Express (India), Mukesh Kumawat, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth, shares his perspective on how investors can approach fixed deposit renewals in a changing interest rate environment. He explains that investors expecting interest rates to remain elevated or rise further may consider avoiding a complete lock in of their maturity proceeds into long tenure deposits. Renewing a portion while retaining flexibility with the remaining amount can help investors respond to future interest rate movements without leaving the entire corpus idle. He also highlights the importance of evaluating post tax returns rather than focusing solely on advertised FD rates. Depending on their tax bracket, investment horizon and risk appetite, investors can compare fixed deposits with alternatives such as debt and arbitrage mutual funds, while considering the differences in risk and liquidity. The larger perspective is that an objective driven approach to reinvestment should balance returns, liquidity and tax efficiency while remaining aligned with individual wealth goals. Small-cap Funds Are Drawing Investor Money. Are They Right for Your Portfolio? Small-cap funds have seen consistent positive inflows since April 2024, reflecting sustained investor interest in the category. Over the last seven months, they attracted an average inflow of around โ‚น7,000 crore a month, with September 2026 recording the highest monthly inflow of โ‚น9,039 crore. They also recorded the highest inflows among active equity mutual fund categories for the third month in a row. But should investors increase their exposure to small caps simply because more money is flowing into them? The opportunity comes with higher risk Smaller companies can offer considerable room for growth, making them an interesting part of an equity portfolio. Investing in small caps also gives investors exposure to a different segment of the market, alongside large-cap and mid-cap companies. However, these companies can be more vulnerable to changes in business conditions and market sentiment, which can lead to sharp falls in their share prices. Recoveries may also take longer than expected, making small-cap funds a riskier investment for those who may need their money in the near future or are uncomfortable with significant ups and downs. How much should you invest in small caps? The right allocation to small caps depends on how much of your portfolio is already invested in them, so the answer will vary from one investor to another. Those with high exposure, say 80%, may need to reduce it, while investors with limited, say 10%, or no exposure may consider increasing their allocation. The aim is to maintain a balanced mix of large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap investments based on your financial goals, investment horizon, and comfort with market fluctuations, rather than increasing your exposure simply because the category is attracting strong inflows. Our preferred market-cap allocation is 50โ€“55% in large caps, 20โ€“25% in mid-caps, and the remaining allocation in small caps. This approach allows investors to participate in the growth opportunities offered by smaller companies without allowing small caps to take up too large a share of their equity portfolio. Getting the allocation right Diversification is not just about reducing risk, but about building an all-weather portfolio that can navigate different market conditions. Small-cap funds can contribute to this by offering growth opportunities alongside large-cap and mid-cap investments, but they do not need to make up a large share of every investor's portfolio.

Protima Dhawan, Director and Unit Head, Anand Rathi Wealth Limited, shares her perspective with Moneycontrol on how investors can interpret foreign portfolio investor activity without reacting to headline outflow numbers. While overall FPI flows have remained significantly negative, Protima highlights that foreign investors continue to participate in select opportunities in the primary market, particularly large IPOs. This indicates that part of the institutional liquidity is moving from the secondary market towards the primary market. For SIP investors, foreign selling should not become a trigger to stop investing. SIPs are designed to invest across market cycles, and periods of correction can allow investors to accumulate more units at lower prices. The uncomplicated approach is to stay focused on long term wealth goals and investment discipline rather than reacting to short term movements in foreign investor flows.
