Here we see the @ATLASexperiment Inner Tracker (ITk) Pixel Module assembly #AtCERN.
The ITk is a completely new, state-of-the-art detector that will replace the current innermost layer of ATLAS. Composed of ultra-precise silicon sensors, it will track electrically-charged particles by detecting the small signals they leave behind.

ALT Display of a candidate event for the production of two W+ bosons via vector-boson scattering, followed by their decay into two muons and two muon neutrinos. The muons are represented by the red lines in the inner detector and the muon spectrometer, and the two jets by the yellow cones. The direction of the missing transverse energy associated with the two neutrinos is indicated by the dashed grey line. (Credit: ATLAS/CERN)

📣 We have beam in the tunnel 💫
Today, the Large Hadron Collider received the first particle beams of 2025. #BeamTime
Protons were injected into the #LHC for the first time since November 2024, when the annual year-end technical stop (YETS) started. This is the fourth year of #LHCRun3, and the new data-taking season is about to begin.
Stay tuned for more #ParticlePhysics news.

CERN's experiments are global efforts. The 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics honors over 13,000 researchers whose labors have led to the precise description the Higgs mechanism, the discovery of dozens of new particles, analysis of rare processes and matter-antimatter asymmetry and exploration of nature at the shortest distances and most extreme conditions. breakthroughprize.org/News/9… @CERN

A slice of ATLAS 🎂
Today’s #PhotoOfTheWeek highlights the recent @ATLASexperiment week, a time when the collaboration gathers to share the status and plans of the experiment.
On 19 Feb 2025, they held a Poster Session, a chance for young physicists to present and discuss their work, followed by a Reception held to celebrate the end of the terms of Spokesperson Andreas Hoecker and Deputy Spokesperson Manuella Vincter.
Do you know what the miniature spokespersons are wearing around their necks?
Hint: it measures something. 😉 Let us know in the comments.

So it begins… the heavy-ion run at the #LHC 💪
Yesterday at 11.13 am, a new #HeavyIon run began at the Large Hadron Collider, smashing together lead ions at an energy of 5.36 TeV per nucleon pair.
While the LHC mostly collides protons, once a year it collides heavy ions – such as lead nuclei – a key ingredient for preparing the primordial soup called the quark–gluon plasma, a state of matter known to have existed shortly after the #BigBang.
For the next 17 days, every minute counts to take lead–lead collision data.

Happy 70th anniversary CERN 🎉
#OnThisDay 70 years ago, twelve European countries came together to establish what has become the world’s largest #ParticlePhysics laboratory, home to the #LHC, and where the #HiggsBoson was discovered 12 years ago.
In how many ways can you say #HappyBirthday?
In this video, representing our 24 Member States, CERN people share their birthday wishes in their native language.

The final piece of the puzzle 🧩
The #HiggsBoson was discovered on 4 July 2012 by researchers from the @ATLASexperiment and @CMSExperiment, two large international collaborations at the Large Hadron Collider (#LHC).
This discovery confirmed the existence of the #Higgs field and the mechanism that gives particles their mass, thus completing the #StandardModel of particle physics.
In this year when we celebrate CERN’s 70th anniversary, we go #BackToTheFuture and celebrate some of the achievements that opened the door to a better understanding of the #Universe. #CERN70

A lucky day for physics at the #LHC 🍀
Earlier today, the Large Hadron Collider reached an integrated luminosity of 100 inverse femtobarns – equivalent to ten million billion collisions – delivered to the @ATLASexperiment and the @CMSExperiment in 2024, with 28 days of proton–proton collisions to go. This is a first-time achievement in a single run of the #LHC.
Luminosity is an important indicator of the performance of an accelerator: it is proportional to the number of collisions that occur in a certain amount of time. The higher the luminosity, the more data the experiments can gather for #physics research.
Do you remember why there is no data referring to the period from 2018 to 2022? Here’s a hint: #LHCRun3
