Scale of job losses in universities would be seen as a national crisis in manufacturing. Or any other strategically vital industry
One professor who recently left academia said it felt like being a miner in 1982 and it’s hard to disagree

William the Conqueror killed Harold II at Hastings on this day 1066. Of his Harrying of the North, one writer said: 'So terrible a famine fell upon the humble and defenceless people, that more than 100,000 Christian folk of both sexes, young and old alike, perished of hunger.'

#OTD 490 years ago 1536 the Pilgrimage of Grace began in East Yorkshire. The people of Beverley gathered on the Westwood to oppose the religious changes of Henry VIII in sympathy with a revolt in Lincolnshire which had begun (and fizzled out) a week before. @hull_libraries

Crusader armies Notably - at full stretch - the Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem could raise a force of 20,000 troops. This might not sound like much, but for comparison the German Empire could raise around 15,000. Why was the kingdom able to raise much larger armies? (1/2)

The @rnli are the best of us. Skilled and courageous volunteers who put themselves into harms way, at a moment's notice, to save those in distress at sea. If you think people and institutions like that are the problem in our nation, then you need to give your head a wobble ⚓
Our charity exists to save lives at sea. Our mission is to save every one. Our lifesavers are compelled to help those in need without judgement of how they came to be in the water. They have done so since the RNLI was founded in 1824 and this will always be our ethos.

With the heroes of the @RNLI under attack again, I’m reminded of this passage from Bill Bryson.

Hull City condemns the abhorrent racist abuse directed towards our new signing Robinio Vaz on social media. No individual should ever experience discriminatory abuse, and the club will provide Robinio with our full support. 🔗 wearehullcity.co.uk/news/202…

I've just signed up to the Independent Historians Network. It's a new and growing body of, well, independent historians looking to connect outside of the usual academic sphere. Some meet-ups are being arranged in different cities so if this sounds of interest to you then join in! independenthistorians.org/

There's something of a medieval coronation about this. The king who held the south has lost the support of his courtiers and the usurper will ride into London heralded as a saviour by the city. I suggest northern France for Keir Starmer to recruit mercenaries and prime his heir who's sure to return with Macron's backing.
🚨 WATCH: Andy Burnham has just left Manchester and is set to arrive in London at 1:09pm

The forgotten party in all this is #HCAFC. How can it be fair they have spent over a week preparing to face one opponent and now have two days (players are off today) to face another? They may have grounds for a legal challenge. Whole thing is a mess.

Not sure "we spied but aren't very good at it" is the line to take #hcafc
📊 Southampton failed to win any of the three matches they admitted to spying on their opponents prior to #saintsfc [bbc]
