I have a new article out in @RStatecraft: "We do not need a war... against autocracy to decry what is happening in Ukraine. Far better to reform ourselves, adopt restraint in our rhetoric, and leave the task of setting the world on fire to others." responsiblestatecraft.org/20…

Susan Collins was one of the Great Women of American history. When I was a young Republican I considered her a hero. Her steady descent into political convenience and corruption mirrored the decline of the Senate. Her last term was a disgrace.
Susan Collins is one of the Great Women of American history. It is no exaggeration to say that she is the soul of the Senate. All republics require such a forum where the elder statesmen can assemble in crisis to hash out a compromise that satisfies no one but preserves the state. Losing someone of her character and caliber, on top of the attrition of similarly civic-minded institutionalists of the previous generation — your Moynihans, Liebermans, Hatches, and Byrds, for all their many shortcomings — is a severe blow to the republic and its ability to function. Now we have a senate of El-Sayeds and Fettermans, unworthy men too anti-American to be trusted with power or too self-important to wear a necktie. Too many have pledged to nuke the filibuster to pack the court and make DC a state. Dark and degrading times lie ahead. For her part, Senator Collins never missed a roll call vote in 30 years. She surpassed her idol Margaret Chase Smith in longevity. And like Smith, she left a trail of worthy adversaries’ corpses in her wake only to finally succumb to an utter mediocrity. Maine, and certainly America, will be very poorly served by Troy Jackson compared to Susan Collins. He cannot and will not take a leading role in getting the hard, unglamorous work of governing done to preserve our Republican institutions. And Chuck Schumer’s boundless cynicism has brought the constitutional order to the brink. I hope it was worth it for the all the credit he will surely receive from his party’s base that loves him so much.

I've gotten the opportunity to work with Troy Jackson in cross-partisan coalitions, he takes legislative work seriously and held a district that is much more conservative than he is. I trust he will do just fine in the Senate.

You signed a deal with the devil. And now you're surprised that the terms ended up being different than you expected? Perhaps now would be a good time to re-examine the sense of judgement that led you to back Trump in the first place.

I know, right? Whoever could have predicted that he'd treat the economy like an Atlantic City slot machine and conduct the foreign policy of a drunk baboon? What is the world coming when we can't trust very stable geniuses anymore?
Terrible news for us on the Right. Tuesday is shaping up to be a blue tsunami. All Trump had to do was work on fixing the cost of living crisis & not start a new war -- as he promised. He started a war that continues to screw up the economy for most people. Great, just great.

Tonight I'm remembering Melissa Hortman. She devoted her life to bettering politics by serving her community through civic life. That she was killed for her service makes us uglier as a people and dims whatever light is left in our city on the hill. thecrimson.com/article/2025/…

Rank choice voting is good because it defeats lesser of two evilism. Remember that the Dem establishment opposes it bc they want to be able to coerce you into voting for the federal version of Cuomo every four years.

Campaigns win on stories not policy positions.
The central puzzle in American politics is why Republicans continue to win elections despite pursuing deeply unpopular policies. The simplest explanation is that issue positions don't matter nearly as much as we like to think they do.

My ode to the late Alasdair MacIntyre just posted on @The_Tablet. I explain how his philosophy remained age-defying & urgent, showing a possible path out of the "moral wilderness." But his insight came from a constant, often painful ability to change 🧵 thetablet.co.uk/features/vir…

Montaigne— here in On Pedantry translated by Donald Frame— would probably respond in terms like these to the use of Chat GPT by college students. It is not an education until you understand ideas well enough to make them your own:

I love @mikeduncan's podcasts. His book on the Roman republic is a significant part of the inspiration for my dissertation. If you think he can do what he does without academic research existing then you're an absolute idiot.

That said, if academia doesn't start to value the type of work Mike Duncan does in a more serious way, I fear it will die. The distance between academia and the rest of the society is becoming far too vast to be sustainable.
