Got back to my hotel in London at midnight to discover the receptionist sleeping on an inflatable mattress behind the closed reception desk. Is this normal?

“How might we square the fact that they have lost a degree of mental capacity now, that they have left instructions when they were younger to end their life when this happens, with the fact that they are perhaps the most content they have been in their whole life?” he asks."

𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐍𝐈 - 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐈𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 renewni.co.uk Northern Ireland today is a place transformed. In a generation, we have come from conflict to build a peaceful, democratic society. Across our communities, people live, work and build their lives together, within a settlement that respects difference. There is a shared sense of belonging and a quiet pride in what we call home. Too often, that story is overlooked. The conversation drifts towards division. Confidence has been shaken by instability, pressure on public services and uncertainty about what lies ahead. We focus too much on competing futures, instead of improving the present we already share. But Northern Ireland is changing. More people are looking beyond old divisions. The foundations are already in place. A growing economy. Ambitious and talented young people, with the ability to deliver. This is our moment to move forward with confidence. To realise that opportunity, a stronger case for Northern Ireland must be made. Renew NI exists to lead that work. Bringing together evidence, ideas and practical solutions. Building a clear, positive vision that reflects our strengths and meets our challenges head on. A future where more people feel proud, not just of what we have overcome, but of what we are building together. A Northern Ireland that delivers. Confident in ourselves. Clear in our direction. We can build a Northern Ireland people don’t just live in, but believe in.

Another very rough bar I went to was Valli Baar in Tallinn, Estonia, entirely unchanged from the Soviet era. You are not made to feel very welcome here as a tourist, but that’s fine. I had a really horrible drink, and a piece of rye bread with egg and sprats on it.
Probably either the now-closed Berlin Bar on the Shankill Road, or the Prince Albert on the Newtownards Road, both Belfast. Berlin Bar was a bit rougher, but the Prince Albert had some incredible decor:

Preventing someone from donating to a terrorist organisation is a defeat for liberal democracy, apparently. Midwits, midwits everywhere.
The banning or restriction of the sale or display of Sally Rooney's books (or anyone else's) on the basis of their political views, represents a defeat for liberal democracy and freedom of expression. We only have to go back to the treatment of Salman Rushdie to understand what it means.
