🎙️3 new podcast episodes premiere Aug 24 @ 4pm ET! Brave whistleblowers @andrewbullard15 & @joyjoystern share their stories of spiritual abuse & harm at IHOP Atlanta / Gate City. Links to each one below 👇
These survivors’ bravery, courage, & resolve are a force to be reckoned with. Shame on all government officials & politicians who refused to do the right thing to hold the abusers accountable.
Here’s to hoping that we in the survivor, advocate, deconstructed/reconstructed & exiled church community can all take a step back to see each other for who we are & stop attacking each other & let kindness lead. Many of us are still in pain & trying to heal. None of it is easy.
Major red flags 🚩🚩🚩that many of us who were at Bethel see. Lots of people say, “That’s just Kris being Kris” and brush it off as if it’s not a big deal. But these are serious & I don’t know of any leader who has the guts to confront him about this.

Some of the most destructive spiritual abuse I encountered at Gate City Church (formerly IHOP Atlanta) came after I was handed this book that promised “light, clarity, and comfort for the brokenhearted”.
The synopsis is David’s submission to Saul is God’s perfect example on how to deal with harmful and abusive leadership. Any attempt to confront or take action against harmful leadership was considered to be “of the spirit of Absolom”.
This led to the most traumatic season of my life where I was told to where my only job was to spend long hours in the prayer room to “figure out my offense” with no clear distinction on what that would look like.
This was my job, my “calling”, I couldn’t leave. I had children depending on me to provide. The pressure to figure it out was immense.
I was told I could not be promoted in the organization until I “figured out my offense”. Again, despite no examples of what that would look like.
This book provided only harm and confusion.
Over one million copies have been sold since 1980.
Lord have mercy.

Profound ways to love people:
· Give them space
· Encourage their authenticity
· Let them learn their own lessons
Let loved ones be their own person. Love is the combination of separation and closeness.

After abuse, we end up asking so little from life. We get stuck in those memories, & see ourselves as a burden for not adapting better. We shrink our requests for change, pleasure, hope-yet we’ve already paid for someone else’s actions. Please go live. Ask for more. Be free.

When Mike Bickle was exposed and removed from IHOPKC he left the community in shambles. Many who had given their lives to serve and build the house of prayer were abruptly displaced by the conflict and chaos that ensued.
The ELT looked like deer caught in the headlights. Instead of caring for the community Isaac Bennett told people to leave and Matt Candler told people to eat Cinderblocks.
Aside from the obvious error of Mike Bickle and the direct impact his predatory behavior had on the women he targeted. The Community has suffered much harm as a result of his cowardice and lack of repentance.
For Bickle and the ELT it was better to off load the pain and discomfort to the many staff and worship leaders who called IHOPKC their home than to take responsibility for their own actions.
As many have said, It didn't have to go this way.
You don't get to just hit delete on that Mike, Stuart, Dave, Lenny, Isaac, and Matt. You displayed the worst kind of self-preservation in a moment that called for self-sacrifice and servant leadership, you Lawyered up and transfered assets.
Meanwhile hundreds of your people were set adrift to fend for themselves after giving years and years of life, work, and love to the house of prayer.
It should be written as an everlasting shame on your reputations and follow you all wherever you try to resurrect your failed attempt at God honoring Leadership.
If your example was the only one a child ever witnessed they would surely conclude that God is indeed capricious, malevolent, hard hearted, unfeeling, and not to be trusted. How awful that must be for you.

I don't like this cartoon but it's true nevertheless and it says something important.
I stand with you @andrewbullard15 & thank you & @joyjoystern for your courage in telling your story. May it bring healing to many & meaningful change to the Gate City / IHOP Atlanta community.

I want to thank @AdamShort143 of the @GritInTheWild for having me on his podcast to tell my story.
I suffered years of spiritual abuse during my ten year tenure as an intercessory missionary at IHOP Atlanta and Gate City Church under Billy Humphrey.

This is the My Little Pony version of the Black Horse Prophecy. In this version Mike Bickle is represented by a cute little pony. 🥰 It's 2019.
You can see a lot in this presentation. There are so many moments that ring hollow to me. Honestly, I spent many years involved with IHOPKC, and other houses of prayer and I just never paid much attention to this stuff.
Personally and perhaps selfishly IHOPKC was a place where I could spend hours and hours worshipping God, praying, and studying the scriptures. I miss that a little. I don't miss any of this.
I just want to point out a few things.
First, Bickle actually ties the Black Horse more explicitly to Gruen here and presents John Wimber as a sympathizer who even apologized to Mike for how unfair it was that he was being questioned by leaders as he traveled with John in the late 80s. 👌
Second, at this point, we know that Bob Jones used prophecy in a private meeting with a Mother and Daughter, where he suggested that their private parts were conduits for the Anointing, and told them to disrobe in order to receive an impartation. 🙈
We know Paul Cain preyed on young men, engaged in several homosexual relationships, and that he struggled with alcoholism. Not to mention other abusive behavior. 🙈
Finally, we now know that Mike Bickle himself used prophecy to seduce, manipulate, and groom his 14 year old babysitter and a 19 year old intern. The FireFly report found that a total of 17 instances of Clergy SA and Misconduct occured. Who knows what we don't know. 🙈
I've been in the depths of the timelines and listened to several hours and versions of the Prophetic History and not once are any of these "moral failures" discussed. 🤔
Instead, year after year Bickle kicks the can of prophetic accountability down the road. The 80s prophecies fail and new revelation arrives to qualify the old.
Revival never came to Kansas City in the 80s, scandal hits, and it's just God refining "THE" chosen generation.
In the 90s, Bickle used Cain to reenergize his congregation, and while "revivals" like the Toronto Blessing and Brownsville gathered thousands of Christians, Kansas City sat on the sidelines staring at the wind and Bickle kicked the can down the road.
In the 00s, Bickle began to claim the throne of Pontus Charismaticus. The old prophecies while still important for reinforcing the lore and practice of night and day prayer were far more tame. Yet he still told them year after year as a new crop of young people began to fill out the ranks of his house of prayer. It became the Mythology and the Prophets were transformed into Titans.
The Blueprint of IHOPKC was really about keeping the carrots on the sticks and kicking the can down the road one more time.
Then last year, the truth came out about Mike Bickle. And all the King's Horses and all the King's men couldn't put "the godliest man we've ever known" back together again.

Here’s the kicker…
Why is a current IHOPKC board member publicly engaging with Lisa Stribling’s sermons that claim to pardon Mike Bickle?

Is everyone still at IHOPKC in support of this? Is this surprising?
What has really been done institutionally in response to the Firefly report?

Over the past year, I have been told by several high-profile leaders that you can't define spiritual abuse. I reject that.
Spiritual abuse is the misuse of spiritual authority to control, manipulate, dominate, or harm others—in the name of God or religion. Frequently, it is employed to silence or shame the abused and whistleblowers. It distorts Scripture, exploits trust, and uses faith-based relationships to serve the abuser’s agenda rather than God’s purposes, resulting in emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical harm.
It was employed against me when I was told by an abuser that if I exposed his abuse, my soul and ministry would be at stake because he was that important. 25 years earlier, the same person warned me that if I did not obey him, it would mean my destruction. That is spiritual abuse.
