New paper! We highlight the remarkable expertise of local field assistants @BudongoChimps in interpreting chimpanzee pant-hoot calls—identifying who is calling, their age, sex, and context—revealing scientific knowledge built through years of experience. doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2025.09…
Replying to @AdrianSoldati @BudongoChimps
This wouldn’t be possible without the long-term dedication and expertise of the field assistants and staff of @BudongoChimps, whose knowledge has sustained chimpanzee research and conservation for 30+ years. Here's a glimpse into their work in the forest🎥:vimeo.com/1066744455/925e057…

New research suggests infant-directed communication expanded in humans and likely emerged after diverging from our great ape common ancestor approximately 6 to 8 million years ago.

Did you know that chimps got rhythm??🥁 🎶 Our new study is out in Current Biology showing that chimps drum rhythmically with key elements of human musical rhythm, and that different chimp subspecies have different rhythms! @NakedPrimate @AndreaRavignani
Chimpanzee subspecies drum with distinct rhythms; a finding that could shed light on the building blocks of human musicality. 🥁

Our new paper is out!🐒🔊
Studying two wild chimpanzee populations, we found they flexibly adjust pant hoot acoustics to context (feed vs. travel). Most patterns are shared, but some community differences may suggest a small role for vocal usage learning.
