Sardar Patel & Hyderabad :- September 1948 🇮🇳 One part of Patel’s Hyderabad strategy is rarely discussed. The Nizam tried to take the Hyderabad dispute out of New Delhi & into the UN. 21 August : Hyderabad approached the UN. 13 Sept : India launched Operation Polo. 16 Sept : The UN Security Council took up the Hyderabad question. Hyderabad argued that it was independent & even proposed a UN-supervised Olebiscite. India’s position was clear: Hyderabad was not an independent sovereign state. Its integration was an "Internal Indian matter". And this is where Patel’s approach becomes important. He strongly opposed allowing India’s internal integration problems to become prolonged international disputes. The lesson of Kashmir was already visible : once an issue reached the UN, international diplomacy could continue long after events on the ground had changed. The longer Hyderabad remained unresolved, the greater the chance of the issue becoming internationalised. So Hyderabad was handled very differently. India moved fast. 13th Sept : Operation Polo began 16th Sept : The UNSC discussed Hyderabad 17th Sept : The Nizam announced a ceasefire 22th Sept : The Nizam formally withdrew Hyderabad’s complaint and said its UN delegation no longer represented him. The Security Council did not immediately close the issue. Some members questioned whether the withdrawal was voluntary & Hyderabad remained on the Council’s agenda afterward. But the situation on the ground had already changed completely. Patel was also openly critical of the UN Security Council. He famously called it an “Insecurity Council”, arguing that prolonged international discussion could itself disturb peace. That was Patel’s approach: Don’t allow Hyderabad to become another prolonged international dispute. Keep India’s integration an Indian matter. And act before diplomacy overtakes events.
