This decline could be cuz of the end of late Holocene rainforest crisis. A dry period provided ideal conditions go grow their crop package (yams, millet, cowpeas, etc.) in what was formerly evergreen rainforest. Returning wet conditions undid this o algo nitter.gq/DanTabin/status/211591…
New preprint from @oguzparasayan looks at the origins of Bantu peoples and sequences four historical (~700BP) Congolese genomes. One interesting finding is a population contraction in both Bantu groups and hunter Gatherers ~1500 BP. Read it here: biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

The west African forest / sahel divide is enforced by western academia, but if you actually look at west African history it was common for people to travel across both. The ethnic, commercial and political ties between the forest and Sahel are very deep.
Ngl, I knew I was gonna come across this one of these days. Why do so many Sahelians act like there was some massive technological gap between them and forest West Africans in the precolonial era? Like, what exactly was this supposed gap? Because apart from writing, which was

The problem with this logic that we literally have more Incipient Ergaster fossils in South Africa, among other Anthropological evidence, than we have ancient Stone axes from Saudi Arabia or anywhere nearby. So there is no evidence of Eurasian origins of said Ethiopians.
I am currently working on a groundbreaking theory that early humans were funneled from Arabia into Africa via the Great Rift Valley. The valley acts as a natural funnel from Eurasia into Africa which is why many fossils there have Eurasian origins.

"Eurasian Origins" That wouldn't Explain any fossil there in terms of Affinities. Not Any Ergaster, Daka/Buia, and by that consequences unlikely Bodo. Plus you need to burden of Hominid Settlements predating Ethiopia in Arabia/nearby to substantiate it. nitter.gq/Phillip05166897/status…

Because they limited themselves to incipient investigations of Daka and Buia, not work by Baab or Bruner showing their derived traits towards Kabwe/Bodo, nor Balzeau's work on Kabwe and 3883. They cite work showing their primary Ergaster affinities.

The "Sahel vs. Forest" divide in West Africa is pure historical fiction. In the 1540s, a Malian queen named Makarico marched straight into the windward forest coast and established her own kingdom. The rise of the Songhai empire cause thousands of Malians to migrate southward.

Dahomey was just a tiny fishing settlement in the Bight of Benin. With the advent of the transatlantic slave trade, the region was became the primary target of slave raids from surrounding powerful kingdoms. So they organized themselves into a small polity to stop the slave raids. When they were strong enough, they launched a daring attack on the most powerful slave state in the region. They killed the entire ruling elite, captured a European slave fort, killed all the European slave traders & liberated all the slaves. They tried outlawed slave trading in the region, but Europeans just moved to other coast, armed other African kingdoms to continue raiding Dahomey. Instead of folding, they organized their kingdom wholly for the purpose of waging war on their neighbors. They subdued most of their neighbors, seized control of all trade & became an absolute terror in the region
In 1788, the British sent emissaries to Dahomey to inform King Kpengla Adahoonzou that Dahomey was at the center of the slave trade abolition debate back in Europe, and England was considering cutting all ties with Dahomey. This was his response. Worth a read…

That map isn’t saying that’s where the sapiens population was evolving. It is showing where they expanded into… Reich makes that clear in the paper - he’s not suggesting a specific origin place with that map.

1.2 mya would approximate the spread of the Achulean into Europe and Turkey. The studies of Kocabas, the earliest Specimen of this sort, show affinities to either Kabwe/Bodo or Ergaster, not Asian Homo or Ceprano. Stringer noted for the Yunxian study key fossils were missing.
Homo ergaster-Homo georgicus lineage is 2.3 million years diverged. Much too ancient to be the African archaic in Reich's model. The African archaic and European archaic aka Heidelbergensis branch from Asian Erectus/Java Man 1.266 Mya.

The Levant just as Qafzeh-Skhul and Misliya. Africa has Jebel Irhoud, Aterian fossils, Aduma, Halibee, Eyasi, Various South Africa evidence starting with Klasies River Mouth and Border Cave. Not to mention the Mauritanicus fossils that reflect the Mosaic in Qafzeh-Skhul.
Skhul Cave is occupation is dated up to 130,000 years ago. The Levant is a Sapiens Cradle. There is more evidence of early Sapiens in the Levant than in all of Africa. researchgate.net/publication…

Now, is some of it clinging to Egypt from colonial propaganda? For sure. But, I think those migration stories are partially genuine memory and oral history. Especially since archaeology shows it to be true. West Africans partially descend from hunter-gatherers in Northeast Africa

Unpopular opinion: I think *PART* of the reason for this is that many Niger-Congo ethnic groups somewhat remember that part of their ancestry genuinely originated in the Nile area, in the paleolithic. Nothing to do with Egyptian civilization, but references more ancient origins
Why do many ethnic groups in Africa have oral traditions stating that their ancestors came from Egypt ? 😭

@ericorcadian @Dantabin @Local_Origins1 @sonikku956 @wind_Drawn @mollywop9 @Tatsuya9jp @ofreacharound With Reich's preprint making rounds again, I wanted to revisit the model and my issues with it and the reaction to it. First we must establish what Reich and does not say.
Going to address the physical fossil/Toolkit evidence tomorrow for a thread. It's generally going to be critical.
