My most recent work on the relationship of memory to tantric mysticism and its contemporary relevance as evaluated through the lens of musical-autobiographical memory, presented a few weeks ago at this year's American Academy of Religion conference.

“If the interest in postmodernism is limited to a celebration of the fragmentation of the ‘grand narratives’ of post-enlightenment rationalism then, for all its intellectual excitement, it remains a profoundly parochial enterprise”
-Homi Bhabha
“It would be worthy of the age to print together the collected Scriptures or Sacred Writings of the several nations, the Chinese, the Hindus, the Persians, the Hebrews, & others, as the Scripture of mankind. This would be the Bible, or Book of Books.”
-Thoreau
“Aurobindo conceives of the world as chock full of joy. Living exclusively in a surface consciousness we are not privy to all that is going on in terms of delightful experience, but our everyday ups & downs are like aesthetic experience to the truest part of ourselves”
-Phillips
Henri Bergson (‘Two Sources of Morality and Religion’) on love and mysticism. Tbf the Hindu bhaktas got there first
"An emotion is an affective stirring of the soul, but a surface agitation is one thing, an upheaval of the depths another. In one the oscillation of the parts without any displacement of the whole; in the other the whole is driven forward."
-Henri Bergson
"Since the fruition is not attained immediately all at once, become adept in the visions step by step."

"The repeated framing of these (psychoactive) substance-based techniques as 'trainings' indicates that their goal might be limited to producing liminal sensory perceptions & experiences... Nowhere is the final awakening of buddhahood promised, only liminal experiences"
J. Gentry
The divide between subjectivity & objectivity is erected on the foundation of inaccessibility - we can’t see others’ minds or experience their experience (or so we believe). But that would collapse if we found a way to measure or observe inner states, which we can partially do…
…now through EEG and other technologies, though not to the extent that is needed to dissolve the divide. But if technology opens up inner experience to view outside of that person’s subjectivity, we would have to admit that inner experience is as objective as anything else.
“Archetypes may be real without being rigid, and enduring without being uniform in their expression.”
-Jorge Ferrer
Lack of experiential data vis-a-vis gnosis isn’t a counter argument, it’s the absence of data needed to make a counter argument. “The opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.” (Niels Bohr)

This is a reminder that Prof. of Religious and Buddhist Studies at Stanford University, expert in Tibetan Buddhist thought, Dr. James Gentry, shook the field this summer when he single-handedly demonstrated that medieval Tibetan Buddhists knew and experimented with psychedelics and even included them as part of their path to Enlightenment: "Tripping Toward the Real: Inducing Liminal Sensory Experiences through Psychoactive Substances in Buddhist Contemplative Practice," Journal of the American Academy of Religion, 2026, 94, 548–576 doi.org/10.1093/jaarel/lfag0…
To put this in perspective: Dr. Gentry says this is "the first unambiguous account yet discovered among premodern Buddhist traditions that prescribes the cultivation and consumption of psychoactive substances with the express goal of awakening."
This has sparked a heated conversation on Reddit among some Buddhist practitioners, who can't accept the fact that humans in most cultures, including Buddhists, at some point or another have experimented with mind-altering substances since time immemorial, despite what their ethical codes may say (the Buddha famously prohibited taking intoxicants as part of the five vows or precepts for lay people), and within the right context, such substances can yield knowledge. The heated thread in question: "Textual evidence for traditional use of psychedelic/psychoactive fungi in Dzogchen" (though this title is a bit misleading because Dr. Gentry not only mentions fungi, but also datura and others): reddit.com/r/Buddhism/commen…
"(reading Asvaghosa) I was dazed. I got out Lin Yutang too. All books. For the first time since I was a kid, I sat in my room reading seriously deep into the night. One night I took benzedrine to heighten my excitement... & experienced my first flash of enlightenment"
-Kerouac
“Leave to your opinions their own quiet undisturbed development, which, like all progress, must come from deep within & cannot be pressed or hurried by anything. Everything is gestation & then bringing forth.”
-Rilke
“The issue is not whether the brain participates in the construction of experience- it always does- but whether it’s participation is necessarily closed upon itself or can sometimes mediate genuine contact with dimensions of reality normally inaccessible to consciousness”
Ferrer
"The Dharma realm is permanently manifested without destroying that which is born of causes. Tranquility does not obstruct activity; the Mundane truth does not oppose the Absolute truth. Existence and nonexistence are of a single reality and indistinguishable."
-Yongming Yanshou
