My neighbour’s 7 year old daughter comes to my house almost every weekend to finish my snacks but I enjoy the company
Once she comes, she commands that I put Moana or Frozen for her on the Tv & I obey then she sits on my couch (doesn’t say a word) watches tv until she leaves…
I said yes, and that I have evidence so if she doesn’t date me too, I’ll report to her husband
She laughed and said I should do my worst then turned and went inside
Life is unfair. What does that small boy have that I don’t have?
I’ve been here for over 4 years and you’ve never noticed me despite all the green light I’ve been giving you. It’s not fair
She laughed and said so it’s jealousy that is worrying me. All this anger is because she didn’t choose me…
and looked me directly in my eyes and said, And so? Is that why I called her outside? That is my wife’s younger brother my son?
Tears started coming out of my eyes
I said no but it’s wrong, it’s very wrong. This boy just came here…
Immediately I called her and told her to meet me outside.
She came out looking innocent
I pulled her aside and asked her if indeed she is asking my wife’s younger brother, a boy young enough to be her younger brother out?
She said yes without fear…
I reminded her that marriage was sacred, that another woman’s husband had no business being dragged into such an arrangement & that a home should be built on honour, not immorality
Then I collected his phone & took my landlady’s number bcos it was only her husband’s number I had
What’s wrong with you? If my brother plays his cards well, we might not even have to pay rent again. After all, she’s the one collecting the rent on behalf of her husband.”
I didn’t think of that so I paused small. But still, what is wrong is wrong. What is bad is bad!
What exactly are we teaching the younger generation? Must everything in life be about money? Must a young man abandon his values because an older woman has money to throw around?”
I shook my head in disappointment.
My wife rolled her eyes. “Must you always be dramatic?
You just finished NYSC! You are 24 years old! You came into my house because you needed help getting your life together, and this is what you have decided to occupy yourself with?”
I turned to my wife. “And you! You are sitting here celebrating this nonsense?
He shrugged. “Well, she told me she likes me and asked me out. I told her I would think about it.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. I lost my temper immediately. “Are you out of your mind? Have you completely lost your home training? This woman is old enough to be your older sister!
sending him money and calling him almost every day.
And that evening, she had come over because her calls had gone unanswered multiple times.
“What?” I turned to the boy. “Is something going on between the both of you?”
“What’s going on?” I asked
My wife was still laughing when she started explaining. Apparently, since her brother moved into our house, our landlady had developed a sudden interest in him.
She has been behaving like a teenager. She had collected his number, been buying him data
Not once had she shown the slightest interest in my existence but today she’s hugging & smiling with me
She said she was just leaving & walked out giggling like a school girl
My wife locked the door, came back & gave her bro high-five then they started laughing mischievously…
I came back home from work and saw her in my sitting room watching Netflix with my brother-in-law
I was so shocked when I entered that for a second I thought I had entered the wrong apartment until I saw my wife
My landlady smiled, greeted me and even hugged me. Hugged me!
Anyway, I decided to mind my business. Recently I noticed he started getting close to my landlady. This is a woman who in the four years we had lived in that compound, has never exchanged more than a compulsory good morning with me…
“But how will he get a job if he doesn’t go out to look for one?”
She said that he was submitting applications online and that he was also hoping I could help him secure something.
I nearly laughed. Me that is still praying for a better job for myself…
In the four months this boy has lived under my roof, I have only seen him leave the house twice to look for a job.
Whenever I complain to my wife, she becomes defensive and ask if I’m not seeing El Niño. That she doesn’t want her only brother to suffer under sun…
