A must-read re: #AI from leading @MIT economist Daron Acemoglu. And like we’ve been saying, without very robust regulations we are completely fucked. But, US legislators are too busy cashing tech checks and making TikToks.

@nichcarlson @hblodget the world is turning. Readers are not getting what they need from a skeleton crew.
Our demands are reasonable. We can end this strike by EOD.

Today, our bargaining committee sent two letters to groups with meaningful influence on Insider: Axel Springer and KKR.
We asked them to encourage Insider to give us reasonable counters, a key move toward ending our ULP strike.
Here are the letters and their key points: (1/6)

On Jan 1, California & Washington joined NYC & Colorado, requiring employers to disclose salary ranges on their job listings.
How're the new pay transparency laws playing out on in @Glassdoor data?
1. ~2 in 3 listings in CA, WA, NYC have salary ranges & the share is rising.

This anecdote from tech sounds a lot like how the Fed is hoping to cool inflation w/o hurting employment. A candidate w/ 2 job offers in hand is still getting a job; they just have less leverage to negotiate higher pay than if they had 5 offers in hand.
Layoffs. Hiring freezes. The news coming out of the tech industry has been alarming in recent weeks. But here's the encouraging reality: The job market for tech workers is still going strong.

Highlighting two nice points from @AkiIto7's piece on pay compression:
1. With more pay transparency from employee conversations, platforms like @Glassdoor & new laws, it's increasingly untenable for employers to let large pay disparities to persist.
💰 If you've been at your company for more than a year, you're probably underpaid.
That's because the red-hot job market has forced employers to offer high pay to new candidates — which has created a divide between rookies and veterans, @AkiIto7 reports.
