Media in the time of genocide, @FranceskAlbs: 1. The elimination of Palestinian journalists; 2. construction of Israeli information regime; 3. the role international media in normalising legal distortions, legitimising atrocities. Truth under the rubble: ohchr.org/en/documents/count…
"We are Witnessing the Israelisation of Our Societies" In this difficult and unflinching conversation, Palestine Deep Dive's Jehan Alfarra and Ahmed Alnaouq are joined by Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, and Eyal Weizman, founder of Forensic Architecture, to examine the destruction of Gaza, the silencing of Palestinian journalists, and the growing struggle to hold those responsible to account. Francesca Albanese discusses her report A Truth Under the Rubble, exploring the targeting of Palestinian journalists, the suppression of information, and the role of international media in shaping narratives about Israel’s war on Gaza. She explains why the destruction of evidence, the killing of witnesses, and the removal of physical traces raise profound questions about accountability and the international community’s obligations. Eyal Weizman, author of Ungrounding: The Architecture of Genocide, examines how the transformation of Gaza’s landscape threatens not only physical evidence but also Palestinian memory, identity, and the possibility of return. Through the work of Forensic Architecture, he explores how satellite imagery, witness testimony, and the built environment can help reconstruct what has happened, even as the landscape itself is being erased. The conversation also tackles the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC), US sanctions against international justice officials, arms transfers, and the responsibilities of governments under international law and the Genocide Convention. @FranceskAlbs | @weizman_eyal | @AlnaouqA | @j_alfarra

Two+yrs ago I said: " I long for the day there will be an investigation on the role of Western media in the genocide in Gaza". From the very beginning many authoritative media have acted unprofessionally and irresponsible. My last report proves there is more. And it's ugly.

The West Bank is not a suburb of Tel Aviv. Its occupation is unlawful: Israeli soldiers must leave (ICJ 2024). By omitting context/legal frameworks media like @nytimes have contributed to the “humanitarian camouflage” that frames Israel's crimes as proportionate hence acceptable

The line between tech designed to care and tech designed for war is blurring. Our data is sold, leaked, and weaponised, and can end up being used to train lethal algorithms.

Episode 2 is a deeply painful watch on the #Minab strikes. Mahdieh and Amin’s mother recalls the horror - “On my way there, there was a pickup truck filled with children's bodies, all in girls’ clothes... I knew no one would come out from the rubble alive.”youtu.be/iF1663_LL_I?si=WZLD…

An obvious thread: all human life is equally valuable, recognisable and equally worthy of care, protection, love and mourning. Dehumanisation rests on destroying the capacity to feel vulnerability and grief for others. Algorithmic warfare is nothing new.

And, I would add, there is so much more to be written and explored still on how the dawn of algorithmic warfare in military operations is making it a far harder task to collectively conceive of this, and to challenge, eroding our ability to bear witness and demand accountability.

But. Rather than treating a threat (from an “other”) as a reason to wage war, what would it mean to use our shared exposure to these harms as the foundation for global non-violence? How might recognising each of our own vulnerabilities lead us to a deeper understanding of others?
