๐จ Toni Kroos on Harry Kane winning the Ballon dโOr ahead of Kylian Mbappe:
โIโve seen some people saying Mbappe was robbed. I donโt agree.
Kylian is an exceptional footballer. I know what he can do, and I watched his performance against Barcelona. Scoring twice in a Classico is impressive.
But I think people have become confused about what theyโre actually arguing.
Are we discussing who is the more exciting player to watch? Who is faster? Who can dribble past 3 defenders?
Or are we discussing who had the better season?
Because those are different conversations.
I remember something from my time at Madrid.
After one match, we were sitting in the dressing room and one of the younger players was watching highlights on his phone.
He showed me a goal and said, โToni, look at this. Incredible player.โ
I watched it and said, โYes, very good.โ
Then he showed me another clip.
And another.
Eventually I asked him, โDid his team win?โ
He said, โI donโt know.โ
I told him, โThen maybe we should find that out before deciding heโs the best player on the pitch.โ
He laughed, but I wasnโt really joking.
Football has become very focused on moments.
A player scores a spectacular goal, everybody shares the video, and suddenly weโre discussing whether heโs the best in the world.
But a season isnโt one moment.
Itโs what you do in February when your team is struggling. Itโs how you perform when the opponent knows exactly what youโre going to do. Itโs whether your teammates can rely on you every week.
Thatโs why I respect Harry Kane so much.
People look at him and see a goalscorer.
But watch what he actually does.
He comes short to receive the ball. He helps his midfielders. He sees passes that some midfielders donโt see. And then, somehow, heโs still in the penalty area when the chance arrives.
I remember playing against Tottenham when Harry was there.
Before the match, we discussed his movement, because you couldnโt simply tell your centre-backs to stay close to him.
If they followed him, he could create space behind them.
If they stayed where they were, he could turn and find somebody running into that space.
I remember saying to one of our defenders, โDonโt let him make you decide everything for him.โ
He looked at me and said, โThatโs easier to say when youโre not the one marking him.โ
He had a point.
And Harry has been doing that for years.
The difference now is that heโs finally receiving the recognition that should come with that level of consistency.
Mbappe can do things Kane cannot do.
Of course.
But Kane can also do things Mbappe cannot do.
And I donโt understand why admitting that has become so difficult.
I played with Cristiano Ronaldo. I know what a truly exceptional attacker looks like. But even Cristiano understood that football isnโt decided by how impressive you look in a thirty-second video.
You have to produce.
Again and again.
Harry has done that.
And the funny thing is that people are now using Kylianโs two goals against Barcelona to argue about an award that recognises an entire season.
It was a brilliant performance.
But if you need to explain why somebody deserved the Ballon dโOr, you should be able to discuss more than what he did yesterday.
Harry Kane won the award because of what he delivered over the season.
Not because he shouted the loudest.
Not because he had the most supporters arguing for him online.
And certainly not because somebody felt sorry for him after his years at Tottenham.
He earned it.
You can prefer Mbappe as a footballer. Thatโs your opinion.
But preferring a player doesnโt automatically mean he deserved every award that somebody else won.
I think thatโs something football supporters should learn to separate.
Tonight belongs to Harry Kane.
And I donโt think he owes anybody an apology for that.โ
At just 8 years old, an young Harry Kane was ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ by Arsenal after being labelled โa bit chubbyโ and โnot very athletic.โ ๐
They didn't believe he had what it took.
Before becoming a superstar at Tottenham, he was sent out on ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฅ loan spells:
๐ฌ๐ง Leyton Orient โ League One
๐ฌ๐ง Millwall โ Championship
๐ฌ๐ง Norwich City โ Premier League
๐ฌ๐ง Leicester City โ Championship
Four loan spells. Countless setbacks. Years of being doubted.
He went on to become Tottenham's ๐๐๐-๐ง๐๐ ๐ leading goalscorer, England's ๐๐๐-๐ง๐๐ ๐ leading goalscorer and one of the deadliest strikers in world football. โฝ
But despite all those goals, records and individual awards, one thing kept eluding him...
๐ ๐ง๐ฅ๐ข๐ฃ๐๐ฌ. ๐
He had to wait until he was ๐ฏ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฆ ๐ข๐๐ to finally lift the first major trophy of his career.
From being rejected as an 8-year-old to becoming a champion at 31.
He never stopped working.
He never stopped believing.
He ๐ก๐๐ฉ๐๐ฅ gave up.

Milwaukee Brewers fans showed up to tailgate World Series Game 1 at nine in the morning.
The parking lot gates were still locked. First pitch was ten hours away.
In old Japan, when ten thousand people camp outside a fortress at dawn with iron cauldrons, smoke, and provisions, it is called a siege.
Milwaukee laid siege to its own castle. Out of pure love. With bratwurst and folding chairs.
When reporters told Christian Yelich that fans had been lined up since nine, he said he was surprised it took them that long.
In my land, a general knows the battle is already half won when his people light the morning fires before the gates even open.
Nobody guards a castle like the Midwest in October.

We lost two great actors this year. They were also our Brothers in Arms.
Tom Skerritt (August 25, 1933 โ October 21, 2026) enlisted just after graduating from high school, serving a four-year tour of duty in the United States Air Force as a classifications specialist. Most of his enlistment was spent at Bergstrom Field, Austin, Texas.
James Tolkan(June 20, 1931 โ March 26, 2026) served briefly in the Navy during the Korean War, completing basic training in San Diego before shipping out to Oakland, Calif., to prepare for duty aboard the Haskell-class attack transport USS Sandoval.

Tonight Jalon Daniels won his first game as an NFL quarterback.
He was on the Prime Video set afterward when he stopped talking and waved somebody over.
"Ma, come here. Ma, come here."
Her name is Star.
Jalon Daniels' father made it clear he was not going to be part of their lives. Here is what his mother decided to do about that.
"I wanted to make sure that he never felt that feeling of not having Dad there."
So she worked full time for an insurance company and took a second seasonal job at Toys R Us.
She drove him to Pop Warner practices. She would not let him sleep over at friends' houses until high school, though he could bring ten of them to hers anytime.
And when he wanted to go to a party, there was a condition. She parked outside of it.
"She let me know when it was time to leave," he says, laughing. "An hour and a half before the party ended, we were on our way home."
Here is the other thing she told him, over and over.
She wanted him to grow up to be the kind of man anybody's daughter could bring home to her mother.
Now the football, which nobody handed him either.
His sophomore year at Narbonne High School in Los Angeles, the coaches moved him back down to the freshman team.
He transferred to Lawndale High School, won the job, and Lawndale went 14 and 2 and took the first state championship in school history.
His first scholarship offer came from Tennessee-Martin. He committed to Middle Tennessee State. Then Kansas came to see him in December of his senior year, and he flipped.
He gave the Kansas Jayhawks six seasons. In 2021 he beat Texas in Austin, where Kansas had not won a game since 1938. In 2022 he threw for 544 yards in the Liberty Bowl. Then a back injury took 2023 away, and most players leave at that point.
He stayed. He graduated with a 3.58 GPA. He was voted team captain four times, which no Kansas player had ever done. And with the first real money he was ever allowed to earn, he started a foundation for single mothers raising athletic children.
He named it after her.
In April, all 32 teams passed on him for seven rounds. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him as an undrafted free agent on May 8.
Tonight was his second career start. He went 19 of 25 for 189 yards and threw a touchdown to Bucky Irving. The Buccaneers beat the Dallas Cowboys 24 to 16 for their first win of the season after losing their first four.
One win does not make anybody an NFL quarterback, and he would tell you that himself.
But when the cameras finally found him, the first thing he did was make sure they found her too.
"No matter what, I was present, and he always knew I was present."
