New manual actions incoming for AI tools and app-building platforms? ๐ฌ
Google updated their document on preventing user-generated spam - and warns tool owners to look out for new manual actions. ๐ฌ They specifically call out "platforms and tools that let users publish shared pages, generated content, or web apps" as well as "generated outputs, or interactive tools."
What was added:
โช"Only index content meant for Search" - talks about tools that let users create shareable pages, generated outputs or interactive tools.
โชWatch GSC for alerts "if Google issues a manual action against your site or detects security issues."
โช"Check the page indexing report and Search performance report regularly for unexpected spikes in indexed pages, impressions, or queries that don't match your platform's purpose." They also mention to look for a small number of users generating a large share of indexable URLS.
They don't mention specific tools, but we have recently seen that conversations from Muse (and before that ChatGPT and Claude) were indexed. And also we've seen people creating ChatGPT sites that in some cases have deceived people when they get indexed.
Sounds to me like Google is putting the burden of curation onto the tool makers now. If your tool lets people create content, you need to be really careful about what gets indexed!

๐ The latest @OpenAI Signals data shows that Information seeking now represents 20.2% of ChatGPT messages, close to Writing at 21.4%. ๐

* Information seeking is happening outside work: 76% of โSeeking informationโ messages are non-work related. This includes product information and recipes, along with other specific information requests.
* Information-seeking behaviour varies across markets

๐ช๐ธ Spain: 25.3%
๐ซ๐ท France: 25.0%
๐ฉ๐ช Germany: 22.9%
๐ฌ๐ง UK: 22.7%
๐บ๐ธ US: 20.2%
๐ง๐ท Brazil: 15.8%
๐ฎ๐ณ India: 15.3%

* Work-related research into goods and services is gaining share
The median country share of work messages classified as โObtain information about goods or servicesโ increased from 1.8% to 3.0% between Q1 2025 and Q3 2026.

๐ @semrush has updated its AI Visibility Index which now shows insights across 9 markets across 22 industries for ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini and AI Overviews, clearly showing that despite sharing the same language (English) there are clear differences in sources used and brands showcased across them which are clearly localized ... so if you're still thinking that "what works in the US will work across other English speaking languages because most of the citations come from the US" ... think twice.

๐ 38% more YoY Google searches, 8% fewer organic search clicksโฆ and 41% fewer paid search clicks?! Welcome to the fourth SERP Squeeze Monday! ๐
This weekโs query: โcoffee tumblerโ, comparing September 2026 vs. 2025 in Google US.
What does the @Similarweb data show? More searches, but fewer clicks for both organic and paid results:
* Search volume: 23.6K to 32.5K (+38%)
* Organic search clicks: 3.6K to 3.3K (-8%)
* Paid search clicks: 3.9K to 2.3K (-41%)
Comparing @ahrefs' September 2026 vs 2025 Top 10 SERP snapshots show that:
* In 2025: The SERP showed 10 traditional organic search results.
* In 2026: The SERP shows only 5 traditional search organic results, with an AI Overview, Shopping pack, Top Stories, Image pack and People Also Ask.
Also, Reddit is now shown in 3 of the 5 traditional organic search results in the 2026 snapshot, along with Amazon and Zara Home.
It's (again) not you... it's Google. Growing search demand doesnโt automatically translate into a growing organic search traffic opportunity. And a higher organic share of clicks doesnโt necessarily mean more organic traffic either.
Looking forward to your own examples ๐

๐ AI Overviews Appear on 82.5% of US Brand Searches - Here's what to do and what it means for your SEO & AI Search Strategy by Yulia Deda / @SERanking ๐
* The most searched brands trigger AI Overviews less consistently.
* AI Overviews rely on the homepage half as much as organic results do.
* After the homepage, AI Overviews most often cite product-related and company information pages.
* About 3 in 5 brand pages cited in AI Overviews donโt rank in the top 10 for that search.
* 61% of AI Overview citations come from platforms brands manage or take part in.

A fantastic, must-read piece from @gfiorelli1 going through recent debates about the value of AI search ... beyond referral traffic and conversions, it's about marketing ๐
"...we risk confusing the final economic purpose of marketing with the different mechanisms through which marketing creates value... A marketing activity can contribute to future commercial results without being the channel through which the final transaction occurs. This is neither a radical proposition nor an attempt to justify spending money on an emerging technology. It is one of the basic principles of marketing."
A few key topics addressed:
* If conversions are the only metric, should we cancel the podcasts too?
* Search has never been exclusively about capturing demand
* AI Search visibility is not the objective. Relevant brand associations are.
* What about the agentic future?
* What this changes in practical SEO strategy

๐จ New data by SE Visible (The @SERanking companion platform for AI Search)๐จ
I know the big, sexy point here to make is, "Are Google's AIO's encroaching on space your brand used to own (i.e., by ranking #1 for your brand terms)? With 82.5% of brand queries pulling up an AIO, that's a good question.
By the way, that number falls off for enterprise brands - so SMBs and mid-size companies beware.
... as the brand website is only cited by AIOs 39% of the time. ๐ฑ
However, what caught my eye was not only that but... do you know which pages Google chooses from a brand's site in organic search?
๐ข 71.1% - Home Page
๐ข 3.8% - About Page
... versus AIOs
๐ฉ 36.8 % - Home Page
๐ฉ 11.7% - About Page
That's quite stark, don't you think?
@CrystalontheWeb remember that webinar we did on "About page SEO"... finally some validation for it!
[See the full study for the breakdown on all sorts of page types and a slew of other data points].
Big thanks to @chris_nectiv Long for sparking this conversation (and for your insight in the article).
Make sure to check what @pelogia @parthsuba77 @aleyda Alli Berry, @danaditomaso Jordan Koene had to say about what the data means!
And of course, amazing job by the team Anastasia Kotsiubynska Svitlana Tomko Yulia Deda and all!
