Cats Paradise (Paraíso de los gatos), created in 1955 by Spanish-Mexican surrealist artist Remedios Varo...
Remedios Varo was a Spanish Mexican surrealist painter known for her dreamlike, mystical worlds filled with alchemy, science, and the occult. She was born in 1908 in Spain and later fled Europe during WWI, eventually settling in Mexico, where she produced most of her iconic work.
Varo’s paintings often depict elongated, ethereal figures engaged in strange scientific or magical activities, blending elements of medieval symbolism with modern surrealism. Her style is frequently compared to artists like Leonora Carrington and Salvador Dalí, though her work has a more introspective and esoteric tone.
Some of her most famous works include Creation of the Birds and Exploration of the Sources of the Orinoco River, where she combines precise, almost scientific detail with fantastical imagination. Her background in technical drawing, influenced by her father who was an engineer, gave her paintings a uniquely structured and intricate feel.
Varo passed away in 1963, but her work has grown in recognition over time, especially in Mexico where she is considered one of the most important surrealist artists of the 20th century.
