I wrote this because I'm worried we're walking blindly into a future where there will be no corporate accountability for the UKs Covid disaster. **We have no reliable data on workplace transmissions** Companies are getting off the hook, whilst individuals face fines & shaming

“There are now 2.2 unemployed people for each available job, with jobseekers navigating the most competitive jobs market since February-April 2021 – when the economy was recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. (6/8)

Comment from @BRHarrison_ on labour market release from @ONS ⬇️ “As the Government finalises its Spending Review, today’s figures paint a picture of a weakening labour market that could undermine their ambition of boosting employment during the remainder of the Parliament. (1/8)
The revised estimate of employees on the payroll in April 2025 was down 55,000 on the month. The provisional estimate for May 2025 was down another 109,000. Learn more about this release ➡ ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabo…

Writing for @ConversationUK, @AlicePMartin, Head of Research at @WorkFoundation (@LancasterManage) argues that for the Government's new 'Youth Guarantee' to work, there needs to be enough good-quality, secure jobs available for young people⬇️ theconversation.com/the-uk-w…

I wrote for @ConversationUK on why direct job creation should be a part of the government's youth guarantee, rather than the spectre of benefit sanctions. 26% of jobs on DWP find a job site are temporary > can lead to a cylce of insecurity & worklessness theconversation.com/three-wa…

Comment from my colleague @asliatayy for @hrmagazine on our analysis of the time off gap: > 1.15m people don't qualify for statutory sick pay > below-average earners have 2 fewer days of annual leave per year than those with above average pay hrmagazine.co.uk/content/new….

📝New research 📌Our discussion paper looks at whether current time off policies are sufficient to support an older & sicker workforce stay-in work. 📌We find that time off in the UK has become widespread, but access to it is unequal.🧵⬇️(1/9) 🔗lancaster.ac.uk/work-foundat…

Important report out today by the Work Foundation. See below. It's been great to see sick pay reforms feature in 5 of 7 major party manifestos. Reforms, including day-one sick pay at a higher weekly rate for every worker, have to be a priority for the next Government.
Replying to @WorkFoundation
In a new survey of more than 1,000 senior business leaders across the UK - undertaken by @Survation – nearly half of employers (47%) say they do not provide more than the statutory minimum level of sick pay. (5/9)

This finding on the inequality of time off has really stuck with me. An annual leave defecit of 2 days per year can really compound across a lifetime, especially if you're also getting less access to parental leave or sick leave. See our new report, Time Off, for more.
Replying to @asliatayy
We also found that people earning less than £32,882 had 2 fewer days of annual leave per year vs those earning more. This creates a 'vicious cycle' where lower-income workers and leave deficit that can really compound over a lifetime. (5/9)

Coverage in the @DailyMirror of our finding that over a million workers (two thirds of whom are women) also don't qualify for statutory sick pay. This is another major time off inequality that risks deepening the decline in health among the working age population.

As we work longer, do our leave policies reflect these changes? My research with @AmanNavani_ and @AlicePMartin, published today, surveys employers & analyses labour force data to reveal a worrying inequality in time off that risks deepening the UK health crisis.🧵(1/9)

Great blog from @mmu_decentwork's @ProfCarolA on why improving employment conditions and job quality in social care is critical for overcoming its recruitment and retention crisis (also critical for DWP progression policy...many UC claimants work here!) 👇 xitter.cf/mmu_decentwork/status/…
