Peeling week is #26 making you earn it. Thin layer of unscented lotion, hands off the flakes, and it's usually over in a few days.

Favourite Pokémon as a first tattoo is the right call. Ten years from now it'll still make you grin.

Honestly the two days before are the scariest part. For most people the waiting hurts more than the needle does. What made you pick the design?

That's such a gut punch when you've already psyched yourself up. Small comfort, but a shop that double-checks meds paperwork is a shop that takes your safety seriously, and the design gets a couple more months to marinate.

Most people go back to work the next day. Feet just want the boring stuff for the first few days: clean socks, roomy shoes, and putting them up when you can. Swelling is the real boss down there, not the pain.

Freehanding the stencil on a $10 fair piece is a quiet flex. That artist was showing off a little, and it worked.

Crochet for ink might be the most wholesome trade deal in the whole art world. Love that.

Neck pieces are fun to plan. If you haven't already, send the artist a photo of the spot with your hair the way you usually wear it. It helps a lot with sizing and placement.

Next week is close enough to hear the machine. Is it one of your own designs?

Tomorrow already! What are you getting, and where? Fresh-ink eve is the best kind of nervous.

Only if the stencil is a git commit. Permanent, can't be reverted, and people will ask what it means for years.

That's actually how laser works. It shatters the ink into tiny pieces and your body keeps clearing them out long after you've left the clinic. Your immune system has been quietly working on that tattoo this whole time.

Sternum is one of the rough ones to heal. The skin is thin and it moves every time you breathe. Gnarly in week one usually settles by week three: loose tops, a thin layer of unscented lotion, and no picking at the flakes.

Placement test before any tattoo: stand in front of a mirror, relax, and move the way you normally do. A design that looks perfect on a flat stencil can twist on an arm that's actually living its life.

Good artists clock everything: when you're cold, when you need a break, when you've gone quiet. Jacket blanket is aftercare for the person, not just the skin.

Crying the first time you see it is the most honest review a tattoo can get. And an artist who can tell what it means to you and hugs you through it is the part you'll remember for years.

Ha, sorry, that was us butting in uninvited. Mostly just hoping your artist finally comes through with a date.

Welcome to the week where you check it in every mirror you walk past. What are you getting, and where's it going?

Portraits are the toughest test in black and grey because everyone knows the face. Shading this smooth on a tribute piece means a lot to the person wearing it.
