Lived in this building for 5y after arriving in SF in my early 20s. $700 / mo, not bad for a 1 bedroom (just have to share kitchen and bathrooms with old Chinese ladies). Stayed there well after I started earning mid 6 figures. Good for the soul.
A Microsoft AI scientist chose to live in a tiny room in San Francisco’s Chinatown for less than $1,000 a month. @annakook gives us a rare look inside a single-room occupancy building, where residents have private rooms but share kitchens and bathrooms.

Can confirm -- most of my friends in Paris have already bought or are in the process of buying a weapon

We tried to warn the world and far too often, to be frank, we were yelled at for doing so. “Regulatory capture,” “marketing hype,” “doomer anxiety,” “fear-mongering about open source,” “why don’t you talk about the benefits?”
Replying to @hinapansari
yes. it was always going to be this way. we tried to warn the world.

To make it through this alive and happy we have to dodge: • Severe human misuse (esp bioweapons from states / terrorists) • Severe human concentration of power (AI lab or gov) • Rogue AI (including for decades after AIs clearly no longer need humans to survive) • A US-China or other war prompted by AI disruption • Severe economic disempowerment, or the world just generally being unpleasant and unfulfiling Many difficult gates to pass through, none of which we've made massive progress on so far. (On top of that to avoid a moral catastrophe we also have to make sure we never accidentally make our AIs into moral patients who are enslaved or suffering.)

ANTHROPIC's DEPUTY CHIEF INFORMATION SECURITY OFFICER: "as bad as things have gotten in the past 4 days, they are going to get a lot worse before they get better."
as bad as things have gotten in the past 4 days, they are going to get a lot worse before they get better. security leaders, never let a crisis go to waste: please go to your boards and ask for help right now. not for ai, for the basics. (we need to hold on for ~18 months.)

In January 2025 my mom’s lung cancer spread to her brain. The drug with the best chance of helping her was approved in China but not here. A doctor told me, almost as an aside, that if she were Chinese she could buy it at a pharmacy. So I flew to Shanghai and came home with 26 boxes in my luggage. That was 19 months ago. My mom is still here, still working, and in her words has had an amazing three years. The drug was approved in China in 2023. The FDA approved it in July 2025. It still is not for sale here. I know of at least 30 Americans who have made the same trip. I have been scared to tell this story because I worried it could cost my mom access to the medicine keeping her alive. But the problem matters more than my silence. These drugs need to be developed and available here, and that means FDA reform. Art Allen at KFF Health News told our story this week. It also ran in The Washington Post. kffhealthnews.org/health-ind…

I think Duet and Dots are the wrong form factor for the enterprise because they aren't AGI-pilled enough. The major agent releases today (Grok Bot, Duet, Dots, Muse, Instinct) all act as an "AI Chief of Staff." This allows each employee to get their work done faster, but it doesn't always make a company move faster. Executing is no longer the bottleneck, so even proactivity on individual tasks isn't necessarily a big win. Models need to understand organizations and align with the overall mission to truly move the needle. They have demonstrated goal-directed strategic behavior in simulations: alignment.anthropic.com/2026…. The missing skill is aligning the models to the right goals. Until then, humans have to continue solving coordination. Anecdotally, I've heard "in the high MTS circles" that a lot more time for frontier researchers is now spent on meetings for coordination since agents are doing most of the implementation and execution. The rest of the industry will soon face this bottleneck. The AGI-pilled form factor is a model with autonomy that acts at the same level as other employees. A true collaborator rather than someone to manage.

Lindy has its own phone number! Ways you can use it: 1/ call it on the drive home to update your CRM 2/ have it call customer support and wait on hold 3/ let it take calls on your behalf, and get the message in Slack or iMessage Just ask Lindy to get started.

Factorio really was the perfect training for the agentic future
I don't know if people realize how literally I mean it when I say that AI agents are going to turn building a business into playing a game of Factorio

I've come to believe that it's a lack of self-reflection, not being conniving or manipulative, that makes someone a bad person. Everyone engages in occasional behavior that is harmful. A "good person" takes that feedback to heart, takes responsibility for their actions, and tries to do better next time. A "bad person" pushes the thought away and refuses to reflect on their behavior. Over time, doing that repeatedly - refusing to be morally accountable - is what makes someone a bad person. It doesn't mean they don't have the capacity for redemption, but it's impossible to collaborate with people who refuse to learn from iterated moral games.

I think about this constantly. People assume that backsliding into barbarism is an unthinkable aberration, but it's actually the historical norm, and it's our current run that's unusual. Don't take it for granted!
We hugely underestimate the utter fragility of modernity.

Many times in history, we've turned the clock back to a much tougher & rougher past.

For centuries after Rome fell, Europeans couldn't even dream of things like hot piped water, luxurious baths & central heating. We think that the real is rational, that the "system" will deliver the goods. The truth is that modern systems are like spiderwebs: break one part & the edifice gets exponentially weaker. Romans who lived through the fall must have been shocked at how quickly things fell apart. Another period when we turned back the clock was when globalization was reversed right after an assassination in Sarajevo sparked WW1.

Keynes writes about this period eloquently. Things were hunky dory & considered permanently so, and then suddenly everything went wrong. When we blithely mock our own systems with tribal glee, when we knock down institutions, when we take political pleasure in zero-sum fights, when we take war less than seriously, just remember that the cave, starvation & the tribal club are never too far away from modern life. Even the most cynical, jaded and corrupt Romans of Nero's era must have been horrified at what they had unleashed once it was clear they were going way back in time. And once they went back, the only way forward was centuries of deprivation & painfully slow invention. It's hard to correlate these events with our own era but just remember that Rome saw itself & its progress as  eternal, ditto pre war Europe.

Modernity is God's greatest gift to us. Cherish it, cultivate it, protect it. Don't let systems get vandalized, institutions get wrecked. Protecting modernity means protecting systems, institutions & norms of civilization. This is not some idle musing: these things stand between you & your family & chaos. Without truth, systems & objective laws, you don't get science. Without science, you don't get antibiotics. As Rome fell, it's interesting to note that truth & facts became subordinated to  pleasure, corruption, luxury & belief in magic.

It's worth thinking about that as you look at our civilization.

Modernity, technology, civilization are all very fragile things.

Seeing this in my circles -- several founder friends have told me they've started getting hit with a huge amount of frivolous lawsuits
A consequential choice will be made soon by government and companies as they are increasingly flooded with agentic AI inquiries that overcome the frictions that gated access (see the graphs - it has already started!) Two options: do you make services worse or better as a result?

France is now at Part III of Atlas Shrugged ("Their Brothers' Keeper" / "The Concerto of Deliverance"). When economic and political decay escalate into uncontrolled physical violence. You won't believe what happens next!
every single shop on my street was looted they even tried to break into people’s homes our building’s front door was damaged, and the entrance door of one of the neighboring buildings didn’t hold up we’re leaving this shithole for good

October 2026: agents are making running a business increasingly feel like playing a video game. Feedback loops are now so tight, you just move at the speed of thought. Expect to intensify until we no longer run businesses at all.
