I've always believed there should be a maximum limit on how much any individual can donate to political parties, candidates, or campaigns, especially during elections. After a certain amount, it stops looking like a donation and starts looking like you're buying political influence, unfairly affecting the natural course of our elections. I'd suggest an absolute maximum of $500,000 per person, total across all political donations during an election cycle, not $500,000 per candidate, party, or organization. That would prevent someone from simply spreading millions across dozens of political groups to get around the limit. Although, ideally, I'd prefer a much lower cap, something ordinary working Americans could reasonably afford. Why should billionaires have millions of times more financial influence over our elections than everyone else? And here's an interesting idea. Ever heard of the Pythagorean Cup, also called the Cup of Justice? You can fill it only so far. Pour too much into it, and the entire cup drains out. Why not apply that principle to political donations? Any contributions exceeding the legal limit would be redirected into public programs. Fixing roads, planting trees, improving schools, whatever benefits the public rather than political campaign accounts. The wealthy could still donate, but attempting to exceed the limit would end up benefiting the very public they're trying to influence. Political donations should support democracy, not turn it into an auction where the highest bidder wins.
