On Thanksgiving we give thanks for all the things we have. And the next day, we trample each other trying to get more.
Don't do it. Resist #BlackFriday.

Imagine you wanted to learn about christianity from all the posts from this summer's denom conventions & assemblies. What would you learn about Christ & his people? What would you learn about love & beauty? What would you learn about what is valuable to these denominations?

As the denomination I grew up in (the Southern Baptist Convention) officially bans women from preaching and pastoring, I’m reflecting on how they taught me it’s “biblical” to hear the Gospel preached by a cartoon cucumber, but not by a woman.

Black History Month Day 2. In her novels and poems, #AliceWalker reworks and rewrites a version of the #Beatitudes multiple times, always with the emphasis on solidarity with the other and the possibility of heaven on earth.

ALT Blessed are the poor, in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Jesus. (Commas restored) . Jesus was as usual talking about solidarity: about how we join with others and, in spirit, feel the world, and suffering, the same as them. This is the kingdom of owning the other as self, the self as other; that transforms grief into peace and delight. I, and you, might enter the heaven of right here through this door.

Black History Month Day #1. We owe so much to the great #HowardThurman, whose interfaith activism, theology, ministry, and ecumenicism articulated questions many of his contemporaries were afraid to ask, including “is our faith impotent?”

ALT Why is it that Christianity seems impotent to deal radically, and therefore effectively, with the issues of discrimination and injustice on the bases of race, religion, and national origin? Is this impotency due to a betrayal of the genius of the religion, or is it due to a basic weakness in the religion itself?

In the year 125AD, a Greek philosopher named Aristides attempted to explain Christianity to Roman Emperor Hadrian. Here’s how he described these early Christians…
“They love one another. They never fail to help widows. They save orphans from those who would hurt them. If they have something, they give freely to the one who has nothing. If they see an immigrant, they take him into their homes and rejoice over him as a brother.”
I know very few people who would describe us the same way today.
Most folks see Christians primarily as unwavering supporters of a convicted sexual abuser with 91 felony charges, gatekeepers who fight to keep anyone they don’t like out of their churches, and pursuers of political power which is then wielded in ways that harm our most vulnerable neighbors.
We have fallen so far. Lord, have mercy. Something has to change.

I know a lot of us are on here trying to better understand what is happening in Israel and Palestine, which is next to impossible with the current state of Twitter.
But this is from Telos who has been doing peacemaking work under the leadership of Israelis and Palestinians in that region for a long time.
It was helpful to me as I seek to understand and know how to pray. I hope it is helpful for you too.
Which BF&M? With the 2000 rendition came the change from
Consulting the HS to consulting the pastor. This is NOT historically baptist. Even if accepted, your logic falls short for changing after decades as that is exactly what the SBC did.
Replying to @paulesq711 @RickWarren
Baptists have always had distinctives. It's not a free for all. Hence the stated values in the BF&M. Without these, nothing stops a Mormon church or Catholic church or JW from becoming SBC. Rick is asking the SBC to become egalitarian b/c 53 years into ministry he became one. That's quite the request (which he had decided should be more of a guilt trip and less of a request).
