Washington will be keeping an eye on rule of law??
You can’t be serious.
Replying to @AtlanticCouncil
Washington will be keeping an eye on business prospects and the rule of law
Both Democrats and Republicans in Washington will be watching what happens next, too. As is customary, the bilateral relationship with Washington will be primarily driven by the executive branch, which launched the US-Serbia strategic dialogue in July, and has expressed interest in Serbia’s EXPO 2027. These partnerships and interests will likely continue, assuming a smooth transition of power.
However, Congress has consistently maintained interest in democratic accountability and the rule of law in Serbia, as was seen with the introduction two months ago of the “Supporting the Rule of law, Building Institutional Justice, and Accountability Act,” known as the SRBIJA act. The bill cites democratic backsliding, repression, and Serbia’s ties with Russia, China, and Iran to call for US support for democracy accountability and sanctions against those who are threatening peace and security in the Western Balkans. The bipartisan, bicameral measure and related policy items will be worth watching in this post-election period.
Serbia’s government transition will also impact its relationship with Washington. Peaceful transitions of power will encourage productive dialogue with the executive branch and smooth unease within the Congress.

This graph puts Ireland’s outlier status on defence & security up in lights. Defencelessness is not a policy-it’s a choice
Even taking into account Ireland's inflated GDP, the scale of under-investment in defence is well illustrated in todays Eurostat figures below. The continued non-existence of a National Security Strategy, a security vetting framework and a full time defence minister also point to a political class that just does not understand how Europe security has changed since 2022. With Putin waging full scale war on Ukraine and hybrid war on other countries, and Trump's unreliability, national security should be a top priority.

Mette Frederiksen Denmark's Prime Minister has declined the offers from Finland and Norway
don’t know what the two countries think you can achieve when Europe that when others have gone solo and, have travelled to Moscow, that it is important that we Europeans go together," she said.”
Mette Frederiksen (S) has told Finland's President, Alexander Stubb, and Norway's Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, that she disagrees with their “going it alone.
I don’t know what the two countries think you can achieve with this. We have previously also stressed in clear reports from the rest of Europe that when others have gone solo and, for example, have travelled to Moscow, that it is important that we Europeans go together," she said.”

Excitement is in the air following Aleksandar Vučić’s defeat in Serbia, reports @IVejvoda.
To build a truly democratic state, the movement that unseated the former president must learn from the mistakes of the past.

Dear Serbia, you have made your voice heard!
After nearly two years of protests for democracy, the rule of law and the fight against corruption, Serbians turned out in historic numbers.
Congratulations to the Student List on your victory!
These are the very values at the heart of our European Union.
A new chapter can begin for Serbia. The door to the EU is open, and we are ready to move forward together.

Why Andy Burnham is making the right call to say that EU freedom of movement is not (or no longer) the problem portrayed by some, and why Britain would not have to join Schengen or the euro if it rejoined the EU:

EU Freedom of Movement is NOT an unconditional right under EU law: it is conditional on finding a job or being self-sufficient i.e. not being a burden on taxpayers. Otherwise they have no right to stay.

Whose fault was that Frostie?
We had no idea because we didn't count anyone in or anyone out.
We had literally no idea.
Other EU countries require you to register at the council, you get a police check and they ask whether you've got a job and enough money.
When I asked Teresa May why she didn't deploy this policy she said "It's just not British".
We've no-one to blame for this immigration negligence but ourselves.
It is hardly surprising that someone open to rejoining the EU would be open to free movement.
Burnham's romanticised picture of EU membership ignores the fact that we literally had no idea who was coming into the country before 2016. We were always told there were 3 million EU citizens in Britain. When we counted them we discovered there were 6 million.
Any attempt to return to free movement has to reckon with the fact that a country like Spain has legalised the status of a million plus illegal migrants since then, and with the very visible tensions and anxieties amongst EU member states on the subject.
There can be no viable policy which doesn't involve HMG having full control over who comes into this country. We aren't there at the moment, but we will need to get there in the end. Andy Burnham may not understand this now, but he will have to do so eventually.
