Probably my favourite version. It's much less bombastic than Olivier's or Branagh's. #StCrispinsDay

In case useful, I wrote this a few years ago for the @NatPrepCom with tips for household preparedness (p22), including things to put in a grab-bag (p9) and more: nationalpreparednesscommissi…
The prime minister has advised people to stock up on tinned food and bottled water in order to be prepared for emergencies, like threats posed by Storm Austen and Storm Boelo In response, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said that "families can stock up but what's going on with defence, the cyber attacks, the hybrid warfare?" Read more about what Andy Burnham had to say about his advice for stocking up: bbc.in/4ijjWv2

“Be ready by having some everyday essentials… three litres of water per person per day, tinned goods... to last a few days” Speaking to @vicderbyshire, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting details advice to households to be prepared for a “dangerous and turbulent world”. #Newsnight

We know from experience in the UK and elsewhere that one cannot simply assume a female leader will also be a feminist who champions gender equality. So, it’s good to see the new PM here in Morocco repeatedly standing up against arrogant sexism and male chauvinism in parliament.

This season, the One Ring is forged. And that is where the real story of Tolkien begins. Because Sauron didn't come as a monster. He came as Annatar, the Lord of Gifts. Beautiful, wise, generous. He offered the elves knowledge, craft, perfection. They welcomed him. They forged the rings with him. And he forged one more, in secret, to rule them all. That is Tolkien's first lesson. Evil rarely announces itself. It arrives bearing gifts. It promises order, efficiency, a world finally fixed. Tolkien wrote that Sauron loved order and coordination, and hated confusion and wasteful friction. He didn't want to destroy the world. He wanted to run it. The Ring is the temptation every civilization faces. Total power, for good reasons. And the whole of The Lord of the Rings is the story of those who say no. Gandalf refuses it. Galadriel refuses it. Even Faramir, a man of Gondor, refuses it. Not because they are weak. Because they know what it would make of them. Tolkien wrote to his son that the most improper job of any man is bossing other men. Then the second lesson: the world is saved by small hands. Not a king. A hobbit. A gardener who carries his friend up a burning mountain. "Such is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world: small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere." The third: mercy is not weakness. Gandalf spares Gollum, who deserves death. In the end, it is Gollum who destroys the Ring. And the last: hope is not optimism. Galadriel has fought "the long defeat" for ages. She knows the darkness always returns. She fights anyway. Tolkien had a word for the moment when all seems lost and the light breaks through: eucatastrophe. Why does it still matter? Because every age forges its own Ring. The ideology that promises paradise. The state that wants to manage everything. The machine that wants to know everything. Each one arrives as a Lord of Gifts. Civilization doesn't survive because it builds the perfect Ring. It survives because, again and again, someone has the courage to throw it into the fire.
This season, One Ring to rule them all. Watch the official trailer now, then witness Season 3 beginning November 11.
