THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH-HUMBER: WHEN INSTITUTIONAL MORAL DECLINE MEETS DECLINING STUDENT DEMAND Students and parents vote with their feet. And at the University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto, Canada, the numbers raise troubling questions. Under Vice-Provost Melanie Spence-Ariemma, an institution already facing serious allegations of retaliation, administrative misconduct and systemic antisemitism is confronting a disturbing contrast with the broader university sector. Applications from Ontario high-school students declined 9.8% for fall 2025, while Ontario-wide applications were growing and the University of Guelph overall reported a 6.6% increase as of April 2025. Its 2025–26 budget projected a nearly 38% reduction in its annual operating surplus, despite modest anticipated revenue growth. Its currently advertised estimated admission cut-offs are just 70–75% across eight programs. These figures raise serious questions about the institution’s leadership and direction. Then there is the extraordinary situation involving Associate Vice-Provost George Bragues. Bragues is the administrator who signed my termination letter. His own position has now been advertised, with a starting salary of $191,723. While the university has not publicly confirmed his dismissal, sources within the institution have told me that he has been fired and management is awaiting a replacement. Bragues signed my termination letter following my filing of a human rights complaint concerning a professor whose alleged statements about Jews included descriptions such as devil worshippers, subhuman and human sewage. I maintain that my dismissal was reprisal for filing that complaint. I further allege that the termination was carried out under the direction of Vice-Provost Melanie Spence Ariemma, against whom I had raised concerns. The University of Guelph rejected my conflict-of-interest objection. Judge and prosecutor being the same? No problem said now U of Waterloo president Bill Rosehart (strange now U of Waterloo is regarded, along with U of T and TMU, as being amongst the most anti semitic universities in Ontario) Apparently, in its view, an administrator implicated in a complaint could exercise influence over the employment consequences faced by the complainant without creating an unacceptable conflict. Laughable I consider that position an extraordinary failure of academic and institutional judgment. Senior personnel have departed, Bragues’s position has been advertised, and the institution faces troubling questions about its recruitment performance. Karma seems to be finally coming around to reek vengeance on U of Guelph, Humber and Guelph-Humber. And the mainstream media? They will never cover this story.
