The economy exhibited several notable trends:
Inflation: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 2.9% over the 12 months ending in December, up from 2.7% in November. This increase was primarily driven by higher costs in shelter and transportation services. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, increased by 3.2% over the same period.
Economic Growth: The U.S. economy demonstrated resilience, with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increasing at an annual rate of 3.1% in the third quarter of 2024, slightly up from 3.0% in the second quarter. This growth was supported by consumer spending, exports, business investment, and federal government expenditure.
Employment: The labor market remained robust, adding 256,000 jobs in December, surpassing expectations and marking the largest monthly gain since March 2024. This brought the three-month average payroll growth to just over 170,000.
These indicators suggest that while inflation remains above the Federal Reserve's 2% target, the economy continues to grow steadily with a strong labor market as 2025 begins.
