On protests in Europe
UN Human Rights Chief @volker_turk says the mass protests across Albania, Belgium, France, Italy and Portugal are raising human rights concerns.
"I condemn all acts of violence, and call on all of those involved to reduce tensions and prevent further violence. The best and only way forward is inclusive and safe dialogue."

“Human rights are our greatest source of hope for peace, justice and sustainability” - see message of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
It was a pleasure to speak to the UN’s Member States today about the work of my Office.
My message: Human rights provide solutions to some of today’s most pressing challenges.

Much more attention needed for mental health for all, and for young people - read new report:
My Office’s latest research found widespread anxiety, depression, and trauma among young people worldwide – a human rights emergency.
On this Mental Health Day, let’s commit to ensuring that every child and young person gets the support they need.

Once again, a wrong response to the promotion of accountability
The imposition of institutional sanctions against the International Criminal Court by the Government of the United States of America are “unacceptable,” UN Human Rights Chief @volker_turk calls for immediate measures of protection.
“They must not be allowed to have a chilling effect on those working for or with the Court in pursuit of justice. I particularly urge the 125 States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court – a full two-thirds of the international community - to take urgent steps to defend its crucial work and assure its ability to function. They have a particular obligation to protect the institution they have created.”

Strong message from the Nobel Committee on the need to fight for human rights and for justice.
“Navi Pillay has shown what courage, integrity and an unwavering belief in human rights and the law can achieve.”
— @UNHumanRights chief @volker_turk says Navi Pillay’s #NobelPeacePrize is a collective win for human rights and all those seeking justice and accountability.

I strongly condemn the sanctions the US has just imposed on the International Criminal Court @CourPenaleInt. These sanctions threaten the system of international accountability and justice. I call on all States committed to the rule of law to stand together in defense of the Court and its independence.
It is painful and ironic that the US imposes sanctions on the ICC only hours after former judge Navi Pillay wins the Nobel Peace Prize.

We cannot tolerate attempts to redefine racism in ways that disregard its history, and the power dynamics that continue to produce racial inequality. Even where formal equality seemingly exists, it cannot erase inequalities accumulated over generations and that persist today. States have an obligation to act on that reality. A world free from racism is a promise that will deliver positively for everyone, irrespective of race. - @Dabokunda, @UNHumanRights Deputy High Commissioner lnkd.in/p/eZQYUC_f
@ 14th Montenegro Pride today. Great atmosphere and great theme - Živjećemo, života radi! We will live, for the sake of life! - Thanks @QueerMontenegro and all organisers. Standing with you for LGBTIQ+ equality, always. @free_equal
Standing for equal rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, for an end to the discrimination, and all violence they face.
The rights of LGBTIQ+ people are not ideological or new. They are exactly the same human rights we all have. Today, they face an escalating onslaught.
At #UNGA, we discussed why it's time to go on the offensive – to defend diversity, equality, and freedom. ohchr.org/en/statements-and-…

Today’s statement in regard to the funeral of Ratko Mladić, issued by independent human rights experts appointed by the Human Rights Council and one UN Human Rights Treaty Body:

The large-scale public commemoration of Ratko Mladić is both deeply inappropriate and profoundly disturbing. Facts established by the ICTY do not get extinguished by one’s death.

Warmest congratulations to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, @volker_turk , on his reappointment for a second four years term.
Montenegro remains firmly committed to supporting the independent, impartial, and dedicated work of the High Commissioner and his Office in promoting, respecting, protecting, and fulfilling human rights and fundamental freedoms for all.
At a time of the continued deterioration of the human rights situation worldwide and the undermining of the international human rights legal framework, support for the United Nations human rights architecture and its established and widely accepted human rights protection and monitoring mechanisms is of even greater importance. Recognizing the HC's vital role, Montenegro continues to be a steadfast supporter of the OHCHR.
At 5pm today, Central European Time, the United Nations at the Headquarters, is observing the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. A survivor will provide testimony. Watch it live on webtv.un.org/en

#Montenegro — Concerning news that a high-ranking Government official made public allegations about a prominent lawyer, apparently in response to his professional activities. I reiterate that lawyers must be able to work free from interference or intimidation.
