Martin Plaut has long been a vocal critic of Eritrea, yet even he cannot dismiss the seriousness of Abiy Ahmed’s rhetoric. Ethiopia’s leadership continues to make threats concerning Eritrea’s sovereignty and openly talks of war over Red Sea access. Rhetoric alone is not proof of military action, but repeated threats must be taken seriously and assessed against verifiable actions. Eritrea’s sovereignty is not negotiable. Choosing peace is not a sign of fear or weakness; it is a sign of strength, wisdom, and responsibility. Ethiopia’s ambitions do not give it the right to threaten war.
