It was a pleasure meeting with South Africa's Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Mr Roelf Meyer, following our September visit to Washington, D.C.
We discussed trade, investment, tourism and innovation, all areas where the United States is a key partner for the Western Cape, and how stronger ties can drive economic growth in our province and across South Africa.
The Western Cape Government will keep building international partnerships that attract investment and create jobs for our residents.

Itโs easy to take Jane Austen for granted because we live in the world that she created. We struggle to see how groundbreaking and innovative her novels are because they set the template for all modern fiction. Pride & Prejudice, to cite the most obvious example, did more than invent a genre. Anyone who now writes a story in which two people fall in love is either inspired by her or reacting against her. Sheโs like Tolkien in that sense.
But she did much more than that. She perfected a method of narration known as โfree indirect discourseโ thatโs now used by virtually every writer. You have only to read the novels of pre-Austen writers to see what a tremendous difference she made through her use of this technique. Literary scholar John Mullan argues that Emma launched a revolution in form & technique thatโs comparable to the innovations of Joyce and Proust. It is the favorite novel of Susanna Clarke and of Katherine Rundell, who calls it โa book that shows as much of the sweep of the human heart, of fear, love, morality, untruth, foolery and triumph as a Shakespearean drama.โ It is also, arguably, the novel that invented the mystery genre, having what J. K. Rowling has called the biggest twist in literature. You donโt notice the greatness of Austen for the same reason a fish doesnโt know that it lives in water.

I've read Pride and Prejudice and to this day I have no idea what the hell people see in it. It's not a bad book but I don't see it as being much beyond a glorified romcom. Pointing out foibles? Yeah, every half-decent writer does that. So what is Austen so good at?
Liz Bennet hates her mother and thinks her father, while well meaning, is an idiot (Austen doesn't seem to consider there to be anything wrong with any of that). Then there's Mr. Collins the clergyman whom the girls dislike despite his status in life. Okay, no one's entitled to someone else's romantic love but what great insights does the book contain on that?
What about any of this is supposed to be so impressive? Dickens would handle a failed courtship more efficiently and entertainingly. Just compare with Mr. Stryver's attempt at marrying Lucie Manette in A Tale of Two Cities.

I remember Lindiwe Sisulu's pledge to eradicate shacks along the N2 before the World Cup. She failed. I remember the RDP housing plan. That also failed. And now the ANC has cut funding for housing everywhere.

Advocate Shameemah Salie, went on Newzroom Afrika to defend a party demand that gay and lesbian organisations be barred from any input into Parliament's revised White Paper on Families. Over thirteen minutes she described gay people as suffering from "an internal jihad", compared the country to Sodom and Gomorrah in the same breath as "the murders, the rapes", and closed by saying she had nothing against gay people "so long as they sit in the closet quietly."
Al Jama-ah has since put Salie forward as its candidate for mayor of Cape Town. The city with the oldest Pride march in Africa is being asked to consider, for its highest office, a person who told its gay residents to be quiet. Her words are on tape, the party leadership endorsed them at the time, and nothing has been withdrawn since. They deserve a second reading.
Al Jamaah is calling on the LGBTIQ+ groups not be allowed to have any input into the parliamentary process dealing with new policies around the family. Al Jama-ah spokesperson Adv. Shameemah Salie explains.

1. I have made the case for and look forward to Helen Zille becoming mayor of JHB. I will also probably reiterate my case for voting for her just before November 4. But now I want to reflect on the character of some of the engagement & what it means for progressive change.

3. This engagement is meant to intimidate & harass those who differ from them. It is meant to silence those who hold a different view. And the part of it that pretends to be progressive has its roots in a Stalinist tradition in the liberation movement which always was intolerant.

Important to keep in mind the grotesque level of dishonesty and defamatory behaviour displayed by Mashaba in this campaign. ASAโs result in JHB will be a direct reflection of it. Holding thumbs for him it works, cause he going to have a lot to explain if it does the opposite.
