smol writing tip? if you find yourself describing inanimate objects as sitting/standing just to avoid "was/were" ("the house stood on the hillside" "the cabinet sat in the corner") there's actually a way to strengthen that prose! 💯🙌

Not to get too wholesome on main here, but I find writing a dedication to a book while drafting makes writing the whole novel easier.
Just thinking, hey, this one is for them, helps with an extra push.

Overwhelmed by your word count goal? Try changing it to a ridiculously low number. 7? Maybe you can write 7 words today?
Celebrate any victories and then increase goal as needed.
Creative self-care is loveliness in action—and so are you.

So an author friend is trying to understand the difference between urban fantasy and magical realism. We're discussing it. I'm wondering what the rest of you think.

you ever crack open a book, read the first page, and it's so good you close it because you know in order to read the rest you need to be in a space free of distractions, uninterrupted, for at least six to twelve hours?
what's the last book you read that did that to you?

Very simplified--but hopefully useful!!--graphic of how a book gets from idea to bookstore:

ALT write the thing, edit into publishable form, get synopsis and query ready, pitch and secure agent, agent sells to publisher, sign contract, edit with your editor in house, goes into production while you get ready for on-sale, meet with marketing and publicity, sales reps sell into bookstores, bookstores order copies, then the on-sale date comes and customers can buy

Do not compare your 👏 unedited manuscript 👏 to a 👏 published book 👏 - traditionally published books go through so many stages of editing and rewriting before reaching your hands, it’s not a fair comparison

Dear Author,
In case no one’s told you lately—you’re allowed to write messy ideas in pretty notebooks.

Dear Author,
May you find joy in your words today, whether you think them, speak them, or write them. May the page rise up to meet the story within you.

Writing is hard, and it’s even harder when your mental health isn’t great. Learn to protect yourself. Set boundaries. Keep your privacy. Learn to mute and block people. Reach out when you need to. Take care and take time off when you need it.

Having doubts? Stop. Write a few words at a time. Write. One sentence. A few lines at a red light. For real. A page when the kids are at school. A page on lunch break. That's all it takes. Poetry happens in the seams of life.

Life will give you a million reasons why you can’t write. It’s up to you to find one reason to do it and then make it happen.
