Integrated courts. The difference between safety and ongoing harm.
In this article, Pat Shannon, our Staff Lawyer, explains how survivors of domestic abuse face the risk of retraumatization and even conflicting judgments due to the lack of an integrated court system in BC. thestar.com/vancouver/2019/0… via @torontostar

NEW: Man found guilty of sexual assault 3 decades after random attack in North York.
The victim, who was 16 at the time, now 48, spoke to me outside court after the trial.

This is a good question ⬇️
Why do people, institutions, and the media turn a blind eye to men's violence?

“We became experts in something that children should never, ever have to deal with.”
They learned to judge when an argument was becoming dangerous. That was their signal to intervene.
“All we could do really was we would just try and put our bodies between my father and my mother.”
Patrick Stewart grew up listening for the moment a family argument would turn violent.
Then he and his brother would step between their father and their mother.
His father returned from the Second World War in 1945, when Stewart was five. He had been a regimental sergeant major in the Parachute Regiment.
Until his return, Stewart remembers his childhood as idyllic. At home, things gradually became more difficult.
Speaking on Loose Women, the actor known as Professor X recalled sitting upstairs with his brother, listening.
“We became experts in something that children should never, ever have to deal with.”
They learned to judge when an argument was becoming dangerous. That was their signal to intervene.
“All we could do really was we would just try and put our bodies between my father and my mother.”
Decades later, Stewart discovered that wartime reports had described his father as suffering from “severe shell shock.”
He says his father was never treated for it, the condition he now understood as post-traumatic stress disorder.
“He was never given any help.”
The discovery helped Stewart understand his father. But it did not erase what his mother had endured.
“That does not justify what he did. Not remotely.”

This is not a failure of the system, it's working as designed. It is the system deliberately strong-arming victims into ongoing contact with their abusers, and calling it the child’s best interests.

I think of this man’s advocacy a lot.
There are two ways a boy can go. He will either grow up witnessing domestic violence and become a perpetrator like his father, or something will guide him towards the light and help him break the cycle.
RIP Sir Patrick Stewart ✊🏽 🕊️ 🌹

🚨A known rapist or abuser could be coaching your kids sports team, or working with vulnerable people, or sitting next to you at work - thanks to a family court loophole.
🚩Family court findings of rape, coercive control or harassment don’t reach the police so they don’t show up on DBS checks.
It’s not a glitch. It’s the system. I've raised the alarm about this exact loophole for years, and in my book released earlier this year.

✌️I'm a firm believer that men need to step up and educate other men in our society
Why is the burden of shame placed on the victim rather than the perpetrator?
It’s time to dismantle the culture of victim-blaming and shift accountability where it entirely belongs: with those who commit violence. We need to hold offenders responsible and creating spaces where survivors are met with belief, support, and complete freedom to heal ⚖️
