Wollongong Wolves have asked Football Australia why no sanction has been dished out after striker Nicholas Duarte was left with five fractures in his eye socket after this sickening incident.
“Players need to understand that flying into a challenge recklessly can have serious consequences, especially when there is contact with someone’s head,” Socceroos great and Wolves boss Luke Wilkshire told football360.com.au.
“We understand that players don’t necessarily intend to hurt an opponent, but a lack of intent doesn’t mean a challenge isn’t reckless or that there shouldn’t be accountability.
“We’ve seen mistimed challenges that cause broken legs or ankles result in suspensions. Contact with the head deserves that same level of scrutiny because of the potential consequences.
“We want to see greater accountability so players take more care and we reduce the risk of something like this happening again. This situation could have ended a lot worse than it already has.”
