Just say no, No, NO! to wind turbines. Do it for the bats, the birds, and the natural world.
Some 18.7 million bats died from wind turbines in the United States between 1981 and 2024, a new study estimates—and the problem has grown dramatically worse in recent years. The research suggests about 100,000 bats died per year 2 decades ago. But by 2021, the boom in wind farms had pushed the toll to 1.5 million bats annually. Learn more: scim.ag/4jDOkCB

"[M]icroplastics change the water that surrounds them, generating high-energy, reactive radicals (reactive oxygen species, ROS) that very likely contribute to biological damage that we see in animals and potentially in humans as a result of microplastic exposure" >>

“They can essentially react with nearby biological molecules such as proteins, DNA, lipids, RNA — you name it — and damage them. Because they’re high energy, they can, for example, bump into DNA and cause mutations.” -- Wei Min, researcher

"When a plastic credit card breaks into microplastics, for example, its surface area increases by a thousand-fold, Min said. That surface area is part of what allows water to split into reactive chemicals."

As always these days, we humans are the product. We've been fully commodified at this point.
🦔Researchers studied data donated by 80 ChatGPT users and found the chatbot created 96% of its memories about them on its own, without being asked. About half of those memories described people’s desires, intentions, emotions or beliefs, and roughly a third of users had health information stored. My Take OpenAI started selling ads in February, and it says it can use your past chats and memories to personalize them if you turn personalized ads on. People tell a chatbot things they’d never type into a search bar, which makes that profile worth far more to advertisers than a browsing history. OpenAI says advertisers never see your conversations, and that can be true while your chats still decide which ads you get. You can view and delete these memories. OpenAI admits the summary you see may not include everything the system uses, though, and deleting a chat doesn’t necessarily erase what it learned. Meta has used AI chats to target ads since last December, with no way to opt out, and most big chatbots will follow. If you ask these tools about your health or your money, turn memory off and keep personalized ads switched off. Hedgie🤗 futurism.com/artificial-inte…

I'm really looking forward to reading Andy's book, The Zizians. This is a fascinating interview, about an incredibly wild and crazy story.
A trail of brutal killings and s—icides. A bizarre trans cult. Human experimentation. Hormones. And a story that's almost too disturbing to believe. I joined the @RubinReportShow with @RubinReport to expose the shocking details behind one of America's most covered-up true-crime cases. Watch the full interview: youtube.com/watch?v=rhZgQ-2B…

So incredibly sad what humans and industrial civilization have done to the living world. I wish I could have seen Indiana before it was destroyed. I lived in Indiana for a while, have visited frequently and now it's a wasteland of crops and chemicals and pollution. >>
I have a map for this! When this was destroyed it’s estimated that as many as ONE FIFTH of the migratory birds of North America were lost. It contained the largest lake in Indiana, Beaver Lake, which had the colorfully named Bogus Island in the middle of it, a notorious hideout for ne’er-do-wells and outlaws.

Looking forward to reading Zach's book, but preparing myself for another difficult read (following on from The Sea of Slaughter and The Passenger Pigeon, also intense and difficult reads if one cares about the natural world).

Massive drops in loon populations over a very short period in time... human development, pollution will be the worst impacts although of course all these articles say "climate change" (still minor compared to our other impacts on most species). Extremely worrying. 😭😭😭
"The most alarming thing is the extent of this decline... Canada is home to 94 per cent of the global common loon population, with an estimated 254,000 breeding couples (half a million individuals) that migrate north to make the next generation". cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/…

there is absolutely no moral justification for foie gras, none. You cannot morally justify force feeding another living sentient being over and over again with a metal tube to the point that her liver swells to ten times the healthy size, her esophagus is scarred from having metal shoved down her throat over and over again, and she can barely or not walk at all due to her abdomen swelling, and she eventually dies from force feeding. If you find yourself on the side defending that practice, I would argue that something has gone horribly wrong in your view of the world. Humans are emphatically not the rulers of the planet sitting on top of a throne on a make believe pyramid, free to treat our other fellow passengers as subjects to rule and abuse as we see fit. That is the philosophy of human supremacy and it is morally repugnant in its own right, we are not on top of the world but co-equal partners in an interconnected web of kin, something every child knows instinctively but that we have been intentionally taught to forget. And the actions and belief systems that come from the forgetting, beyond the destruction it flings on the rest of the world with abandon, is also corrosive to the human soul.

Our societies are crumbling as people who simply do not care about much of anything except violence, power, and a religious death cult take control. Eventually this will happen everywhere that does not protect Western values. Some cultures really are better than others.

I got a "connect your business to Muse" email from Meta this morning. After reading multiple stories this past week about how Muse has gone off the rails in terrible ways. Is Meta smoking crack? Are people really that stupid? How did we get here?

"WA state removes 2,000 tires from Thurston County park... DNR says subsequent surveys found fish were not using the tires as habitat." No one, not even fish, thinks old tires are good habitat. Who ever thought they would?! Gross. theolympian.com/news/local/a…

The situation in my home country. I’m simultaneously incredibly sad and glad I no longer live there… and know there are far too many in the US who would like to see the same situation here. >>
Imagine a dystopian future in which murderous, sadistic terrorists are allowed to walk among us rather than being brought to justice. They’re given refuge and freedom in the very country whose values they seek to destroy. Imagine a future in which children spend hours every day on the internet, some of them persuaded to believe fantastical propositions, such as the idea that they were “born in the wrong body”. And when parents try to challenge these beliefs, the government seeks to silence them with draconian legislation, thereby endorsing a medical pathway involving powerful hormones and irreversible surgery. Imagine countless soulless ideologues embedded in every institution, even healthcare, claiming such harmful interventions somehow allow confused young people to live their so-called “authentic” lives. Imagine a future in which any man who declares himself a woman can demand access to spaces formerly reserved for biological women, and any woman who objects risks being hounded out of her career, branded a bigot and publicly castigated by those in power. Imagine a country in which a Christian praying silently outside an abortion clinic risks arrest, or someone who posts something deemed too offensive on social media can expect a knock on the door from the police. Meanwhile, actual criminals are released early from prison, despite the authorities knowing full well that some will reoffend. And week after week, protests take place on our streets at which extremists openly express their hatred and demand the destruction of the only democratic state in the Middle East, created as a refuge for Jewish people in the wake of the mechanical slaughter of six million Jews in Europe. Imagine a future in which a powerful media organisation, funded by a compulsory levy on the public, instead of exposing and scrutinising these regressive developments, dutifully echoes the narratives that underpin them, reinforcing and normalising the very ideas it ought to be challenging. Well, we don’t have to imagine this dystopian future. We’re living in it. And if anyone has any ideas about how to fix this mess, I’m sure I’m not the only person who would be eager to hear them.

In WA state, where I live now, “woke” fanatics have been extremely successful at indoctrinating children into the cult of “born in the wrong body”; that part of the dystopian present is already very real here.
