Esta escultura es la Esfinge de Naxos, una de las obras maestras más importantes de la escultura griega antigua.
Actualmente se encuentra expuesta en el Museo Arqueológico de Delfos en Grecia.
Es una figura mitológica tallada en mármol que combina la cabeza de una mujer, el cuerpo de una leona y las alas de un ave rapaz orientadas hacia arriba. Medía originalmente unos 2,22 metros de altura por sí sola.
Fue esculpida e instalada alrededor del año 560 a. C. como una generosa ofrenda votiva de los habitantes de la próspera Isla de Naxos para el Templo de Apolo en Delfos.
En la antigüedad, esta imponente esfinge no estaba al ras del suelo.
Se erguía majestuosa en el santuario sobre una columna jónica de más de 10 metros de altura.
En total, el monumento alcanzaba unos 12,5 metros de altura, sirviendo como un símbolo de poder, protección y el estatus de la isla de Naxos en la Antigua Grecia.
