We counted T. rex.
In our new paper (link in thread) we develop a method to learn about extinct species from fossil data and ecological laws. There were ~20,000 T. rex at one time and the total number that ever lived was 2.5 billion.
Check it out - and dm me if you need a copy!

Thrilled to share: out now in @Nature (!) & just in time for US Thanksgiving, the dinosaurian history of how your turkey does the twist. Fibular reduction enabled mid-drumstick mobility, unlocking extreme knee long-axis rotation in theropods 🍗🦖🧵 nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Greetings and Happy #FossilFriday
A quiet end of the week here at UNSM, but I'm kept company by some of the largest beasts to ever walk the Earth.
Here's one of our Bison latifrons specimens, with horns spanning over 2 meters - if I lay down next to it they'd be longer than me!

Literally, being good at math does not mean you're good at real statistics. Real statistics require stepping back from your methods, your data, and thinking about real-world variables.

What can evolution do in 20 million years?
For camels in North America, it gets you from the size of a greyhound to the size of a giraffe.
Hope you can stretch your legs this weekend!

Stegosaurus! Wish I could explain how exciting this is to see. Truly amazing discoveries, going to a world-class museum.
#FossilDay! Shared by Dr. Luis Chiappe of the #DinosaurInstitute, this Stegosaurus tail spike, was found in one of their southeastern Utah quarries. Los Angelos County Museum's Blanding Basin digs have yielded some incredible Jurassic dinos. @UtahPaleo @utahgeological
