In the last yr, Trump’s hostile treatment of the First Amendment has been turbo-charged. The gov't has scaled surveillance, investigation & prosecution of political speech thru NSPM-7 -- a clunky acronym for a dangerous blueprint. Enemies of the State: freepress.net/news/free-pres…

I am so honored @ajc has republished my @freepress oped on the president's longstanding targeting of the media. These official attacks have reached a constitutional breaking point -- with the White House press pool ban on CNN, MS NOW & Politico reporters. ajc.com/opinion/2026/09/trum…

I just learned reporter Luis Galeano has been detained in Miami. This is part of wider trend by the US govt to target immigrant reporters, violating core US press freedom principles. Galeano is from Nicaragua & believed to have pending asylum case in the US. I’ll report more ASAP
The pattern is so troubling. I have chronicled some of it in CHOKEHOLD. And now we're mobilizing allies of all stripes. Stay tuned and #AMA: freepress.net/attack-on-free…

“Mr. Trump’s playbook isn’t random. It employs several recurring modes of attack.”
@AttorneyNora did the dirty work so we didn’t have to: she counted all the ways the Trump Administration has tried to undermine America’s First Amendment.

I missed this during the holiday, but @AttorneyNora's catalog of all the Trump Admin's attacks on free speech is really good (and depressing).
The Trump censorship agenda is chilling & relentless. I count 200+ attempts in 2025 to muzzle press, protesters, public servants, judges, law firms, universities, corporations. But resistance has blunted this & we must fiercely defend free speech: nytimes.com/2025/12/31/opini…

“The next three years will require a vigilant defense of free speech and open debate,” write @nyuniversity alumna @AttorneyNora. The administration must decide which side it’s on and agree to protect our academic freedom. nytimes.com/2025/12/31/opini…

Mirroring Project 2025 "conservative promise," the Trump admin pushed Congress to gut public media, dismantled Voice of America & Radio Free Asia, used FCC to go after & sued outlets for editorial choice, more. This weakens public sense of reality & facts. poynter.org/reporting-editin…
Political speech, disinformation research & debate about regulation of platforms by other countries—these are all sound activities protected by the First Amendment. Govt threat of retribution for constitutionally protected speech is itself distortion of norms & the rule of law.
For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organized efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose. The Trump Administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.
Today, @StateDept will take steps to bar leading figures of the global censorship-industrial complex from entering the United States. We stand ready and willing to expand this list if others do not reverse course.
As I told @nytimes @stevenleemyers, the government’s tactics are chilling and unconstitutional: nytimes.com/2025/12/23/techn…
